Chapter 4: The Unraveling Tides

The fragile bubble of silence that had protected their private revelation burst as a passing waiter brushed past Clara’s shoulder, murmuring a quick apology before moving on. The physical jolt forced Clara back to reality, reminding her where she was and the precariousness of her position. She lowered her gaze from the emerald-clad woman's face to the twin brooches, the blue stones seeming to pulse under the harsh ballroom lighting. The older woman’s hands were shaking visibly now, the dark clutch slipping slightly from her grip before she managed to tuck it securely under her arm, clutching it to her chest like a shield.

"We cannot talk here," the woman said, her voice dropping into a fierce, urgent register that brooked no argument. "People are watching. Follow me. Now."

Without waiting for a response, the woman turned sharply on her high heels, navigating the crowded floor with purposeful strides. Clara hesitated for only a fraction of a second. Every instinct told her to walk away, to drop the silver tray at the nearest station and disappear into the night before her quiet life completely disintegrated. Yet, the blue stone on her collar felt impossibly heavy, pulling her forward with an invisible gravity. Balancing the tray with one hand, she abandoned her post, slipping through the shifting crowd of guests who were too engrossed in their own conversations to notice a waitress tailing a wealthy patron toward the rear of the ballroom.

They slipped through a set of heavy, brass-trimmed mahogany doors marked 'Private,' leaving the music, the laughter, and the brilliant lights behind. The sudden transition into the dimly lit service corridor was jarring. The air here smelled of old paper, floor wax, and distant rain rather than expensive perfume and roasted meats. The woman led them down a narrow hallway lined with administrative offices before pushing open a heavy fire exit door that led out onto a quiet, stone-paved terrace overlooking the city skyline. The damp night air hit Clara like a splash of cold water, stinging her cheeks and clearing the haze of shock from her mind. The woman stopped near the stone balustrade, turning to face Clara with tears finally spilling over her lashes, tracing clean paths down her powdered cheeks.
