Chapter 2: The Question in the Glass

The silence between them stretched, heavy and suffocating, despite the surrounding laughter of guests who remained completely oblivious to the drama unfolding near the ice sculpture. The woman in the green dress stepped closer, invading Clara’s personal space with an absolute disregard for social protocol. Her fingers twitched at her side, hovering near her dark satin clutch as if she needed something tangible to anchor her spinning reality. When she spoke again, her voice was barely a tremor, thick with a disbelief that bordered on terror.

"¿De dónde sacaste ese broche? Eso no puede ser," she asked, her gaze fixed entirely on the small, glittering object pinned securely to the left lapel of Clara’s stiff black uniform.

Clara looked down instinctively, her gloved fingers brushing against the cold metal of the tray. Resting against the stark black fabric was a blue gemstone brooch, its intricate gold sunburst details catching the amber light of the room. It was a modest piece compared to the heavy diamonds worn by the other guests, but to Clara, it was a talisman. She swallowed hard, feeling the sudden weight of the collective stares she imagined would soon turn toward them. She kept her voice low, measured, and stripped of any defensive edge, choosing instead to offer the absolute truth.

"Es lo único que me quedó de mi hermana," Clara responded earnestly, her eyes meeting the older woman's tear-bright gaze without flinching.

The effect of those words on the elegant woman was immediate and devastating. The woman’s knees buckled slightly, and she reached out, her manicured fingers gripping the edge of Clara’s silver tray just hard enough to make the crystal glasses ring softly against one another. The restrained emotion in the woman’s face—the subtle twitch of a micro-expression around her mouth, the slow, deliberate blink fighting back moisture—revealed a depth of history that Clara could not possibly fathom. This was not a mistaken identity or a random coincidence. The mention of a sister had struck a nerve buried deep beneath decades of wealth and carefully curated silence. Clara felt her own breath catch, realizing that the quiet, predictable life she had built for herself in the city was about to fracture beyond repair.
