Chapter 10: The Lion’s Den

They found him near the base of the grand crystal chandelier, holding a crystal glass of amber scotch and laughing softly at a joke made by a city councilman. Julian Vance looked every bit the benevolent patriarch, his tailored charcoal suit fitting impeccably, his silver hair neatly styled, and his expression radiating warmth and charm. It was a masterpiece of performance, a mask worn so long and so well that even the man himself likely believed it. Clara felt her pulse spike, every muscle in her body tightening as she approached the circle of elites, Elena walking silently at her side like a shadow of judgment.
As they drew closer, Julian turned his head, his polite smile automatically adjusting to greet whoever had entered his immediate orbit. His eyes swept over Elena first, a flicker of cold calculation crossing his features before his gaze shifted slightly to the young woman standing beside her in the stark black and white uniform of a catering waitress. Julian froze mid-sentence, his scotch glass stopping halfway to his mouth. The color drained from his face beneath his expensive tan, leaving a sickly, grayish pallor that contrasted sharply with the warm lighting of the ballroom.

The surrounding guests paused, sensing the sudden drop in temperature within the circle, though they remained blissfully unaware of the tectonic plates shifting beneath their feet. Elena stepped forward, her posture rigid, her dark eyes locked onto her uncle with an intensity that made the older man take an involuntary half-step back. She didn't raise her voice; she didn't need to. The quiet deadliness in her tone cut through the ambient chatter like a razor.

"You know very well who she is, Uncle," Elena said, her voice ringing clear and sharp in the sudden hush. "She’s the ghost you thought you buried in nineteen-ninety-eight."
Julian’s eyes darted frantically from Elena to Clara, finally locking onto the blue gemstone brooch pinned conspicuously to Clara’s uniform collar. The sight of the gold sunburst detail seemed to physically strike him, his breathing turning shallow and ragged. For a terrifying second, Clara thought the old man might collapse right there on the polished mahogany floor under the glittering chandelier. Yet, beneath the shock and the rising panic, a cold, predatory gleam flickered in Julian’s eyes, warning them that a cornered beast is always at its most dangerous.
