The days following Julian’s departure brought an unfamiliar sense of tranquility to the massive Vance estate. Claire settled into the spacious master suite, transforming the sunlit sitting room into a temporary nursery filled with soft toys and pastel blankets for Lily. Margaret became a constant, supportive presence, often visiting in the afternoons to read classic literature aloud while the baby slept peacefully in her arms. However, the apparent peace was soon disrupted by subtle anomalies within the household staff. Claire noticed that several senior maids, who had served the family for over two decades, seemed unusually nervous whenever she walked past the service wing. One evening, while searching the second-floor library for a missing photograph album, Claire overheard hushed voices coming from the adjoining corridor. It was Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper, speaking in hurried, agitated tones into an old landline telephone. Claire froze by the heavy velvet curtain, catching fragmented phrases regarding a mysterious safety deposit box and a key left behind in Julian’s old desk drawer. When Mrs. Gable stepped out into the hallway, she startled visibly upon seeing Claire standing quietly in the dim light. The housekeeper quickly composed herself, offering a stiff, formal bow before hurrying away toward the servants' quarters without offering any explanation for her secretive phone call. Troubled by the encounter, Claire decided to investigate the old mahogany desk located in the far corner of the library. The drawers were locked, but recalling Richard’s meticulous nature regarding estate security, she checked beneath the heavy brass inkstand. Taped securely to the underside was a small, cold brass key bearing an engraved number that matched the private safety deposit vaults at the downtown metropolitan bank. Claire realized that Julian had left behind a hidden archive of secrets, one that could either destroy what remained of the Vance family or provide her with the definitive leverage she needed for total independence.
