Chapter 3

The mahogany-paneled walls of the grand study absorbed the dim morning light, creating an atmosphere of claustrophobic solemnity. Richard sat behind the massive executive desk, his fingers steepled beneath his chin as he stared coldly at his son standing across the Persian rug. Julian tried to maintain an air of arrogant defiance, adjusting his cuffs with practiced nonchalance, though a faint twitch near his left eye betrayed his escalating panic. Margaret Vance, Julian’s mother, entered the room quietly, her beige trench coat swishing softly against the floorboards as she took her place beside her husband. Margaret cast a sympathetic yet guarded glance toward the closed oak doors beyond which Claire and the baby waited with the estate staff. Richard broke the silence, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper that vibrated through the quiet room. He placed a thick manila folder on the polished wood surface, sliding it toward Julian with slow, deliberate precision. Julian looked at the folder with sudden dread, recognizing the private logo of the corporate investigative firm his father frequently employed for high-stakes audits. The documents inside detailed months of suspicious financial transactions, secret offshore accounts, and unauthorized liquidations of family assets orchestrated entirely by Julian behind his father's back. Julian stammered an incoherent defense, claiming the records were fabricated by rival executives attempting to sabotage his upcoming promotion to Chief Operating Officer. Margaret closed her eyes in quiet disappointment, the realization of her son’s profound moral failure settling heavily upon her shoulders. Richard stood up slowly, his tall frame casting a long, imposing shadow across the room as he confronted his son with unyielding maternal and paternal authority. The financial betrayal was bad enough, but targeting an innocent child and destroying her nursery exposed a cruel streak that Richard vowed to purge from the family legacy permanently.
