Chapter 11

The preparations for the annual Vance Foundation Gala reached their peak as florists and caterers transformed the grand ballroom into a dazzling showcase of crystal chandeliers and cascading white orchids. Claire stood before the tall mirror in her dressing room, smoothing the fabric of a deep emerald silk gown that Margaret had personally selected for the historic occasion. Little Lily was fast asleep in her crib—a sturdy, beautifully crafted mahogany replacement that Richard had commissioned to replace the one Julian had smashed. The evening air buzzed with anticipation as the first wave of elite guests began arriving in sleek luxury sedans, stepping out onto the red carpet spread across the estate entrance. Claire descended the sweeping grand staircase on Richard’s arm, her composure absolute as flashbulbs popped and society journalists scrambled to capture photographs of the reunited family. However, the festive atmosphere shifted abruptly when a commotion erupted near the outer security gates at the bottom of the long driveway. A battered sedan had forced its way past the security checkpoint, bypassing the automated barriers and barreling recklessly toward the main fountain plaza. The vehicle screeched to a halt, spraying gravel across the manicured lawn before the driver's door swung violently open. Julian stumbled out into the blinding glare of the floodlights, disheveled, unshaven, and wearing a crumpled suit that bore the unmistakable signs of his desperate mountain escape. The gathered guests gasped in shock, stepping backward in unison as security operatives converged rapidly on the intruder from all directions. Julian ignored the security guards entirely, fixing his wild, frantic eyes directly on Claire as he shouted hysterical accusations across the marble courtyard. He claimed that Claire and his parents had conspired to steal his rightful inheritance and banish him unjustly from his own home like a common criminal. The security operatives tackled Julian cleanly before he could reach the portico, pinning him to the stone pavers while he thrashed and screamed obscenities into the night air.
