Chapter 8: The Impostor's Badge

The silence that settled over the foyer was heavy enough to suffocate. Julian took a slow, involuntary step backward, his eyes locked on the man standing beside the control panel. The Detective Vance he had trusted in the hospital emergency room—the man who had shown him the badge and warned him about Elena’s dark past—was now standing in the shadows of the smart-home panel, his posture subtly shifting from defensive law enforcement officer to something entirely more calculated.
"Detective?" Julian’s voice wavered slightly, the terrible realization dawning on him like a creeping tide.
The man in the gray suit didn't draw a weapon. Instead, he calmly reached into his breast pocket, pulled out the leather wallet containing the gold shield, and tossed it casually across the marble floor toward Julian’s feet. It slid across the stone and came to a stop near Julian’s polished leather shoes.
Julian didn't look down at the badge. He kept his eyes fixed on the man’s face. "Who are you?"
"Let's just say I’m an independent contractor," the man replied, his voice losing its gravelly, professional edge and dropping into a smooth, relaxed tone. "Elena and I have been partners in asset restructuring for a very long time, Mr. Vance. Long before you ever met her at that charity gala in Manhattan. You corporate tech types are always so predictable—you build these massive digital fortresses, but you always leave the back door wide open for someone who knows how to sweet-talk the executive assistant."
"You lied to me," Julian growled, a surge of adrenaline overriding his fear as he lunged forward, grabbing the man by the lapels of his rumpled gray suit and slamming him against the wall. "You lied about her past husbands! You lied about the police investigation!"
The impostor didn't struggle. He simply smiled, his hands resting lightly on Julian’s wrists without applying counter-force. "I didn't lie about everything, Julian. Elena really does have a history of wealthy husbands suffering unfortunate falls. The only inaccuracy is that I’m the one who handles the legal cleanup afterward, making sure the estates are liquidated cleanly before the local authorities even finish filing their preliminary reports."
Through the ceiling speakers, Elena’s voice chimed in once more, dripping with simulated sympathy. "Let him go, darling. He’s just an employee doing a job. Just like you were supposed to be doing your job as a dutiful husband while I built our retirement fund."
Julian released his grip, stumbling back a step as disgust and betrayal washed over him in equal measure. "You planned all of this from the very beginning. The marriage, the house, the charity events... even Mia’s accident."
"Mia was a complication," Elena’s voice corrected sharply, the manufactured sweetness vanishing entirely. "She was nosy, she found the offshore statements in my desk drawer last week, and she refused to cooperate when I tried to teach her discretion. Falling down those stairs was a necessary lesson in obedience. Unfortunately, your daughter is just as stubborn as her father."

A sudden, terrifying thought struck Julian like a bolt of lightning. Mia was still back at the hospital, lying alone in Treatment Room Four, guarded only by nurses who had no idea who had access to the building.
Julian spun around and charged blindly toward the locked oak front door, slamming his shoulder into the heavy wood in a desperate, reckless attempt to break the deadbolts.
