Chapter 1

The polished white marble of the grand staircase caught the amber glow of the crystal chandelier overhead, throwing fractured reflections across the opulent foyer. Elena stood near the ornate gold railings, the heavy fabric of her dark red sparkly evening gown whispering against the stone with every microscopic shift of her weight. Two steps below her, young Mia clutched the cold metal railing, her long brown hair tumbling over the shoulders of her beige dress. The stark white orthopedic cast encasing her right leg seemed almost foreign against the luxurious surroundings, a heavy, chalky reminder of an accident that had altered their lives just three weeks ago.
Elena lowered her gaze, her expression meticulously blank, though the muscles in her jaw tightened visibly.
"Please... don't..." Mia whispered, her voice trembling as she pressed herself closer to the gilded ironwork, shrinking away from the woman's outstretched hand.
"Stop being dramatic, Mia," Elena said, her voice dropping to a low, venomous hiss that failed to reach the vaulted ceiling. "Your father is waiting at the bottom. We are leaving right now, and you are going to walk out of this house under your own power, cast or no cast."
"I can't! It hurts! You know I can't balance!" Mia pleaded, tears welling in her large brown eyes as she looked up at the woman she had once called a mother figure.
"You can and you will," Elena snapped, her patience evaporating entirely as she took a sharp step forward, her manicured fingers closing roughly around Mia’s upper arm. "I am done catering to your pathetic excuses. Let go of the railing."
"No! Leave me alone!" Mia cried out, twisting her small body desperately in a futile attempt to escape the grip.
The sudden movement broke the fragile equilibrium. Mia’s left shoe lost its footing on the slick marble edge. A sharp gasp escaped her lips as she tumbled backward, her small body rolling violently down the flight of stairs with a sickening succession of dull thuds against the unyielding stone.
Julian burst from the mahogany doors of the study across the foyer, his dark blue suit jacket flying open as he sprinted frantically across the marble floor. He reached the bottom of the staircase just as Mia came to a rest against the base of the grand pillars, her breathing ragged and shallow.
Julian dropped to his knees beside his daughter, his hands hovering over her trembling frame before gently taking hold of her uninjured leg. He looked up toward the top of the stairs in absolute shock, his chest heaving with adrenaline and rising fury.
"Sweetheart, look at me... You pushed my daughter," Julian accused, his voice shaking with disbelief as he glared at the woman in the red gown.
Elena stood motionless on the stairs, her posture rigid, looking down without a single flicker of remorse.

"She slipped. She can't even walk," Elena replied coldly.
Julian stared at her in horror, realizing the dark truth hanging in the air.
