Chapter 7: The Digital Trap

The heavy click of the deadbolts echoed ominously through the cavernous foyer, locking Julian and the detective inside the darkened house. Julian lunged toward the oak door, grabbing the brass handle and throwing his weight against it, but it didn't budge. The smart-locking system had overridden the manual latches completely.

"Damn it!" Julian cursed, striking the solid wood with the flat of his hand. He turned around to face Detective Vance, who was already sprinting toward the main smart-home control panel, pulling a multi-tool from his pocket to pry open the housing unit.

"She didn't just lock us out of the system, Mr. Vance," the detective said, his voice tense as he worked the metal blade into the seam of the plastic wall panel. "She initiated a total network lockdown. The exterior communication lines have been severed, and the security cameras are currently uploading every local file to an off-site cloud server. If those files clear, your entire digital identity—bank accounts, corporate assets, legal signatures—will be permanently transferred beyond recovery."

"Can you override it?" Julian asked, stepping closer, the pale moonlight from the arched windows casting long, skeletal shadows across the marble floor.

"Not from this panel," Detective Vance replied, successfully popping the front cover off the unit to reveal a tangle of glowing fiber-optic cables and circuit boards. "The master server isn't in this house. It’s housed in the detached guest house out back. That’s where the physical hard drives are kept."

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat. The guest house was situated at the far end of the sprawling backyard, shrouded by thick ornamental hedges and towering oak trees. And walking out there meant stepping directly into whatever trap Elena and her unknown accomplices had set up in the dark.

Suddenly, the overhead recessed lights in the foyer flickered violently before plunging the entire ground floor into absolute darkness. A second later, the built-in home audio system crackled to life, broadcasting a low, distorted hum that slowly resolved into a familiar, melodic voice.

"Julian... are you enjoying the homecoming?" Elena’s voice echoed smoothly through the hidden ceiling speakers, bouncing off the marble walls and creating a disorienting surround-sound effect. "You really should have learned when to walk away. But curiosity has always been your greatest flaw."

Julian gripped the edge of the console table, his voice rising in anger as he shouted up toward the ceiling. "Where is the master drive, Elena? It won't save you! The police are already involved, and your entire past is being unraveled piece by piece!"

A soft, mocking laugh drifted from the speakers, sending a shiver down Julian’s spine.

"The police?" Elena’s voice purred with amusement. "Detective Vance is standing right beside you, isn't he? Tell me, Julian, did you bother to verify his badge before you let him into your confidence at the hospital?"

Julian froze. He slowly turned his head to look at Detective Vance, who had paused his work on the control panel. The detective was standing completely still in the dim moonlight, a slow, unreadable smile spreading across his face.
