Chapter 6: The Emergency Extraction

The atmosphere in the room grew suffocating. Sarah looked down at the medical addendum, her mind racing through tactical contingencies with the cold precision of a combat officer. Staying in this house was a tactical error. Every minute they lingered under Robert’s roof gave his legal team more time to secure injunctions, freeze their bank accounts, or trigger base-level investigations that could stall their careers.

"We're leaving," Sarah said, her voice brooking no argument as she folded the papers and shoved them deep inside the interior pocket of her service coat. She reached out, taking Lily’s small, warm hand from David’s grasp. "Grab the diaper bag from the foyer, David. We’re heading straight to the legal aid office at Fort McNair before the administrative bureaus close for the weekend."

Robert didn't move from his spot by the fireplace. He slowly turned his head, watching them with calm assurance. "You won't make it past the front gates, Sarah. The estate security is wired directly into the county magistrate’s emergency notification system. Any attempt to remove the child while custody litigation is active constitutes a felony violation of a court order."

"Try us," David snapped, his military identification badge already sliding out from his breast pocket and into his palm. "We are active-duty commissioned officers of the United States armed forces. Detaining us without a signed military magistrate warrant is an act of unlawful restraint under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Your civilian security guards can test their jurisdiction against federal MPs if they want to spend their retirement years in a federal penitentiary."

For the first time, a flicker of genuine irritation crossed Robert’s immaculate features. He took a single step forward, his hand resting lightly on the polished mahogany of the mantle. "You think your uniforms afford you immunity from family law? The foundation owns more federal judges and congressional liaisons than you can possibly imagine. You are tilting at windmills, David."

"Maybe so," Sarah said, pulling Lily gently toward the double doors that led to the grand entryway. "But we’ll do it on our own terms, far away from your toxic influence."

As they hurried down the echoing hallway, the sound of the shattered glass crunched softly beneath their boots—a permanent soundtrack to the destruction of whatever familial bond had once existed between father and daughter. The heavy mahogany front doors swung open to reveal the bright, blinding afternoon sunlight, but the freedom they craved felt dangerously fragile, shadowed by the looming threat of Robert’s invisible empire.
