Chapter 13: The Authentication

Standing in the damp chill of the ruined observatory courtyard, Marcus spread a set of portable UV lights across the hood of his Jeep, casting a ghostly purple glow over the original legal documents Sarah had rescued from the Sterling living room.
"Look right here," Marcus said, pointing a small jeweler’s loupe at the bottom margin of the yellowed trust agreement. He clicked on a specialized chemical pen, brushing a colorless solvent across the signature block. "This isn't just an ordinary notarization. Robert used a proprietary micro-ink compound that was only manufactured for the Department of Defense’s classified black-budget contractors back in the nineties."
Sarah leaned in close, her eyes narrowing as the solvent reacted with the paper, causing a hidden string of alphanumeric characters to glow faintly under the ultraviolet light. "It's an assignment code," she whispered. "It links the trust directly to the Sterling Foundation’s covert logistics wing."
"More than that," Marcus said, tapping the paper with his pen. "This code proves that the foundation wasn't just managing Lily’s medical fund—they were using her biological profile as collateral to secure a multi-million-dollar federal research waiver for genetic enhancement trials. Your father didn't adopt her out of malice, Sarah. He engineered her creation to secure a permanent medical patent before the congressional moratorium on human genome editing took effect."
The horrifying truth settled over Sarah like a physical shroud. Lily wasn't just a granddaughter caught in a bitter family feud; she was the living proof of an illegal, highly classified genetic experiment that Robert had spent a fortune keeping buried beneath layers of corporate bureaucracy and judicial influence.
"Where is David?" Marcus suddenly asked, looking around the empty courtyard with a frown. "I thought he was right behind you."

Sarah’s blood ran cold. In the frantic chaos of the Arlington escape, amid the adrenaline and the desperate dash to the safehouse, they had become separated during the tactical struggle with the tactical officers. David had stayed behind to buy her time, and in doing so, he had walked directly into a trap.
"He stayed at the safehouse," Sarah choked out, the reality crashing down on her with devastating force. "He didn't make it to the car."
