Chapter 15: The Reckoning

The morning sun broke through the dense canopy of trees above the Capitol, casting long, golden shafts of light across the manicured lawns of the federal district courthouse. The air was crisp and clean after the night's rain. Standing on the wide stone steps, Sarah Vance wore her service dress uniform with absolute pride, the gold medals catching the morning sun. Beside her stood David, his ribs wrapped tightly beneath his uniform shirt, holding a smiling Lily by the hand in a fresh white dress.
A few yards away, Robert Sterling stood in his immaculate black suit, surrounded by two federal marshals and a battery of high-priced defense attorneys. His face was a mask of cold fury, stripped of all its previous aristocratic arrogance. The documents Sarah had submitted to the Inspector General had triggered an immediate federal audit, resulting in the freezing of the Sterling Foundation’s assets and the issuance of an arrest warrant for corporate fraud and unlawful coercion.
Agent Miller stood nearby, his hands cuffed behind his back as federal agents escorted him toward an unmarked black cruiser idling at the curb.
Robert turned his head slowly, locking eyes with his daughter across the stone plaza. There were no apologies exchanged, no dramatic pleas for forgiveness. There was only the silent, crushing realization that the empire he had built on deception and control had finally crumbled to dust.
Sarah didn't look away. She met her father’s gaze with steady, unblinking composure, her hand tightening reassuringly around Lily’s small fingers. She had fought the battles the military had trained her for, but this victory belonged to her family—hard-won, blood-tested, and absolute.

"Come on, sweetie," Sarah said softly, looking down at her daughter with a warm, radiant smile. "Let's go home."
With David by her side and Lily skipping happily between them, Sarah turned her back on the past, stepping forward into a future they had finally earned together.
