Chapter 5: Gathering the Proof

Back at the Sterling firm’s downtown headquarters, the city lights twinkled through floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Emily stood before the mirror in the firm’s private lounge, washing her face with cool water. The woman staring back at her in the reflection looked different; the haunted, hollow look in her eyes had been replaced by a sharp, calculating focus. She smoothed down her beige blouse and adjusted her burgundy pants, feeling grounded for the first time in years.

Arthur entered the room quietly, carrying a fresh cup of tea and a secure tablet. He placed them on the glass table before speaking.

“Local authorities have already secured Elmwood Estate,” Arthur said, watching her carefully. “Marcus Vance—or Ryan Carter, as you knew him—is currently in custody. However, recovering your stolen assets will require your direct testimony. Much of your father’s estate was funneled through offshore shell companies that only your biometric authorization can legally dissolve.”

Emily picked up the tea cup, letting the warmth seep into her fingers. “I’ll do whatever it takes,” she said firmly, her voice steady and resolute. “I want every cent back, and I want him put away for a very long time.”

“There’s something else you should know,” Arthur added, hesitating for a moment. “Victoria came forward voluntarily about an hour ago. She’s cooperating with federal prosecutors in exchange for immunity. She brought us a digital hard drive containing encrypted communications between Marcus and financial brokers in Zurich.”

Emily raised an eyebrow. “She turned on him that quickly?”

“Self-preservation is a powerful motivator,” Arthur noted dryly. “She realized Marcus was planning to pin the entire embezzlement scheme on her if the authorities ever closed in. People like that don't have loyalties; they only have interests.”

“Let’s see the files,” Emily said, walking over to the table and taking a seat opposite the attorney.

Arthur unlocked the tablet, sliding it across the sleek wooden surface. As Emily scrolled through the digital folders, she saw the blueprint of her stolen life—bank transfers, real estate deeds, and medical prescriptions filled under false pretenses. Each document was another nail in the coffin of Marcus Vance’s criminal enterprise. But amidst the cold financial data, one specific folder caught her attention. It was labeled simply: The Bennett Trust.

Opening it revealed a video file dated just three days prior, showing Marcus and Victoria arguing in the very same driveway where her nightmare had begun.
