Chapter 12: The Turning Point

The cross-examination by the defense was aggressive, desperate, and ultimately disastrous. Marcus’s public defender tried to pick apart Emily’s timeline, suggesting her memories of the initial abduction in Europe were unreliable due to trauma.
“Mrs. Bennett, isn't it true that you willingly traveled with the defendant across multiple European cities before the alleged incident?” the defense attorney asked sharply, pacing back and forth in front of the witness box.
Emily didn't flinch. She met the lawyer’s aggressive gaze with cool, unshakeable composure. “I traveled with a man I believed was a trustworthy resort employee, unaware that he had been secretly spiking my drinks with sedatives from the very first night we met,” she answered evenly. “If you slip a sedative into someone’s wine glass every evening, counseling consent afterward is nothing more than legal fiction.”
Murmurs rippled through the gallery. The defense attorney stumbled over his next question, clearly realizing he was digging a deeper hole for his client. He tried to pivot to her medical history, but Arthur Sterling had already anticipated the tactic, providing ironclad toxicology reports and expert medical testimony proving the presence of long-term neurotoxins in her system.
When the prosecution called Victoria to the stand, the final pillars of Marcus’s defense completely collapsed. Victoria testified in detail about the offshore shell companies, the financial embezzlement from the Bennett Trust, and Marcus’s explicit plan to liquidate the assets and flee the country.
Marcus leaped to his feet at the defense table, his face flushed with rage. “She’s lying! She’s trying to save her own skin!”
“Sit down, Mr. Vance, or I will have you removed from my courtroom immediately!” Judge Henderson warned sharply, banging her gavel with deafening force.

Two marshals immediately pressed Marcus back into his chair, their hands resting firmly on his shoulders. He slumped forward, panting heavily, realizing that his outbursts were only sealing his fate in the eyes of the jury.
Emily watched the dramatic scene unfold from the gallery without a single trace of fear. The man who had once held her arm in a vice-like grip on the Elmwood driveway was now completely powerless, stripped of his aliases, his money, and his freedom. The trial was drawing to a close, and justice was finally within reach.
