Chapter 14: The Verdict

The courtroom was suffocatingly quiet as Emily and Arthur took their seats in the gallery. Every eye was fixed on the jury box as the twelve jurors filed back into the room, their expressions solemn and composed.

Marcus Vance was led in by the correctional officers, his orange jumpsuit wrinkled, his posture defeated. He wouldn't look at Emily; instead, his eyes were glued to the floorboards as he sat down at the defense table.

“Has the jury reached a verdict?” Judge Henderson asked, her voice cutting through the heavy silence.

The foreperson, a middle-aged woman with short grey hair, stood up and held out a sealed manila envelope to the bailiff. “We have, Your Honor.”

The bailiff retrieved the envelope and handed it up to Judge Henderson. The judge opened it slowly, scanning the handwritten paper inside. Her face remained entirely neutral as she adjusted her glasses and handed the document back to the clerk to be read aloud.

The clerk stepped forward, unfolding the paper. “In the case of the United States versus Marcus Vance, also known as Ryan Carter: On the first count of kidnapping across state and international lines, how do you find the defendant?”

“Guilty,” the foreperson replied clearly.

“On the second count of identity theft and fraud, how do you find the defendant?”

“Guilty.”

“On the third count of systematic administration of unauthorized controlled substances, how do you find the defendant?”

“Guilty.”

Count after count, the verdict remained the same. Guilty on all charges.

A collective breath rushed out of the gallery. Marcus slumped forward in his chair, burying his face in his cuffed hands as the full weight of his decades-long prison sentence crashed down upon him. There were no more aliases, no more shell companies, and no more escapes.

Judge Henderson struck her gavel with a sharp, echoing blow. “Marcus Vance, based on the unanimous verdict of this jury, I sentence you to forty years in federal prison without the possibility of parole. Court is adjourned.”

As the marshals pulled Marcus to his feet and led him away through the secure side door, he threw one last desperate glance backward. Emily met his gaze with absolute, unyielding calm. She didn't gloat, she didn't yell; she simply watched him disappear into the shadows, knowing her nightmare was finally, truly over.
