Chapter 13

The jury deliberated for just under four hours before sending a note to the judge indicating they had reached a unanimous verdict. The courtroom filled quickly, the gallery falling into a hushed, reverent silence as the bailiff instructed everyone to rise for the entry of the judge.

Mark and Clara sat shoulder-to-shoulder in the front row, their fingers intertwined so tightly their knuckles ached. Clara took a slow, deep breath, her eyes fixed on the empty wooden jury box.

The foreperson of the jury, a middle-aged man with graying hair and a serious expression, stood up when prompted by the judge and handed the folded verdict form to the bailiff, who in turn delivered it to the bench. The judge adjusted his glasses, scanned the document thoroughly, and handed it to the court clerk to read aloud.

"In the matter of State versus Maya Vance, on the count of felony assault in the second degree against a vulnerable victim, how do you find the defendant?" the clerk read clearly.

"Guilty, Your Honor," the foreperson replied firmly.

"On the count of second-degree burglary, how do you find the defendant?"

"Guilty, Your Honor."

"On the count of witness intimidation and intentional harassment, how do you find the defendant?"

"Guilty, Your Honor."

A collective, quiet sigh swept through the gallery. Maya sat motionless at the defense table, her shoulders slumping forward as the reality of her actions finally settled over her like a heavy, suffocating blanket. She didn't look up, she didn't protest; she simply accepted the verdict of a life derailed by uncontrollable greed and malice.

The judge thanked the jury for their service and scheduled the formal sentencing hearing for three weeks later, ordering the defendant remanded directly back into custody without bail. As the bailiffs escorted Maya out of the courtroom for the final time, she cast one brief, fleeting glance over her shoulder. Her expression was no longer defiant; it was hollow, empty of any emotion at all.

Mark turned to Clara, pulling her into a gentle, protective embrace right there in the courtroom. Tears of relief slipped quietly down Clara’s cheeks, but this time, they weren't tears of pain or fear. They were the cleansing tears of closure. Justice had been served, not out of vengeance, but out of a fundamental necessity to protect their family and reclaim their peace.
