Chapter 1

The bright afternoon sunlight streamed through the tall living room windows, illuminating dust motes dancing around the rich mahogany bookshelves. Yet, the warmth of the room stood in stark contrast to the absolute chill that had just settled over the space. Clara, thirty years old with soft blonde hair tumbling over her shoulders, lay flat on her back against the woven wool rug. She wore a simple white cotton shirt underneath classic denim overalls, her thirty-week pregnancy rounding out her frame. Her face was twisted in sharp, genuine distress, tears pooling in the corners of her eyes as she clutched her lower abdomen. Just feet away, her older sister, Maya, stood rooted in a posture of furious defiance. Maya, thirty, with dark brunette hair and wearing a mustard-colored wool sweater and dark denim jeans, radiated raw anger. The argument had escalated beyond words, culminating in a sudden, brutal shove that sent Clara crashing backward onto the hard floorboards beneath the rug.

Maya gave one final, scathing glare down at her sister, her jaw clenched tight, before turning sharply on her heel and storming away toward the front foyer. Her footsteps echoed with heavy finality against the hardwood floor.

Clara gasped for breath, her hands trembling as she pressed them against her stomach. "This is what you get! She made me do it!" Clara screamed out, her voice cracking with a mixture of physical pain and profound betrayal.

Before the echo of Clara’s accusation could fade, the front door rattled open and slammed shut. Mark, thirty-five, rushed into the living room with frantic urgency. His short dark hair was slightly tousled, and he wore a dark canvas jacket over a faded grey t-shirt and well-worn jeans. Seeing his wife on the floor, Mark dropped instantly to his knees beside her, his face draining of all color. He grabbed her shoulders, his hands shaking slightly as panic overtook him.

"Clara, baby, talk to me. What hurts?" Mark demanded, his voice thick with terror as he scanned her body for signs of trauma.

Clara gripped his forearms, her eyes wide with mounting horror as she looked up into his face. "She's not moving!" Clara cried, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper that cut deeper than any scream.

Mark didn't hesitate. He reached down blindly, scooped up his smartphone from the rug where it had slipped from his pocket, and pressed the screen against his ear while keeping his eyes locked on his distressed wife. The apartment felt suffocatingly small, the air thick with the realization that a family bond had just been permanently shattered.
