Chapter 10

The courtroom was cold, smelling of old paper and floor wax. Fluorescent lights buzzed softly overhead, casting a sterile glow across the oak-paneled walls and the heavy mahogany judge’s bench. Mark and Clara sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked quietly by Detective Vance. Clara wore a simple navy blue maternity dress, her posture straight and dignified despite the lingering physical weakness from her ordeal.

When the bailiff called the court to order, the heavy side door opened, and Maya was led into the room by two uniformed bailiffs. She wore a standard orange jumpsuit, her wrists cankered in heavy steel cuffs. Her dark hair was unwashed and uncombed, hanging limply around her pale face, and her eyes darted nervously across the courtroom until they locked onto Clara and Mark sitting in the front row.

For a fraction of a second, Maya’s expression flickered with something resembling shame, but it vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, defiant glare that mirrored the look she had given Clara on the day of the assault.

"State versus Maya Vance," the judge announced, adjusting his spectacles as he scanned the legal documents spread across his desk. "Charges include felony assault in the second degree, second-degree burglary, and witness intimidation."

The public defender assigned to Maya stood up, speaking in a low, monotone voice to enter a plea of not guilty, citing emotional distress and family disputes as mitigating factors. Mark had to physically restrain himself from standing up and shouting across the room; the sheer audacity of blaming family disputes for a violent attack on a pregnant woman was staggering.

The judge looked over the charges, his expression hardening as he reviewed the detailed police reports, including the break-in and the threatening message left on their living room wall.

"Given the severity of the charges, the blatant violation of property, and the intentional endangerment of a vulnerable victim and unborn child, bail is denied," the judge ruled firmly, bringing his gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack. "The defendant will be remanded to county correctional custody pending trial."

Maya cast one final, venomous look toward Clara before the bailiffs grabbed her arms and led her swiftly back through the side door. The heavy metal latch clicked shut behind her, sounding like the final period at the end of a very dark sentence.

Mark let out a long breath he didn't realize he’d been holding, wrapping his arm around Clara’s shoulders and pulling her close against his side. The legal battle was far from over, but justice had taken its first real, concrete step forward.
