Chapter 2

Julian Vance clutched the dark leather-bound document folder against his chest as if it were a live grenade. The aged leather was cool and smooth beneath his trembling palms, smelling faintly of old parchment, dried ink, and a forgotten history he had spent half his life trying to eradicate. Around them, the high-end evening gala had transformed into a theater of morbid curiosity. Dozens of wealthy patrons in tailored tuxedos and glittering evening gowns pressed back against the mahogany pillars, their champagne flutes forgotten, their eyes darting hungrily between Elena’s trembling fury and Claire’s unblinking composure.

Elena’s face had lost its color beneath the heavy contour and expertly applied makeup. Her elegant blonde updo seemed suddenly stark, framing features that looked pinched and aged under the relentless scrutiny of the crowd. She took a sharp, shallow breath, her diamond bracelets clicking together with a frantic, metallic rhythm. "This is a farce," Julian choked out, his voice cracking slightly as he looked down at the gold-embossed seal stamped onto the front of the folder. It was the original Val family crest—a stylized soaring hawk holding an olive branch—the very symbol Elena had ordered scrubbed from the cornerstone of the building two decades prior.

Claire stepped further into the marble foyer, her beige evening gown sweeping gracefully over the polished stone. She did not raise her voice, nor did she posture with false authority. Her presence alone commanded the space, fueled by a quiet, devastating certainty. "You can call it whatever helps you sleep tonight, Julian," Claire said softly, her tone carrying an effortless chill that made several nearby guests visibly shudder. "Though we both know you haven't slept soundly since the probate court closed twenty years ago."

Julian’s eyes widened in sheer panic. He looked at Elena for guidance, but his wife was entirely consumed by a dark, inward rage. Elena’s mind raced through a dozen desperate contingencies—bribing the municipal inspectors, calling the private security force she personally funded, or simply denying everything and having the trespassers thrown into the freezing night. But the physical reality of the document in Julian’s hands paralyzed her. That folder contained notarized bank drafts, original birth certificates, and the ironclad final testament of Arthur Val, Claire’s grandfather and the true architect of this sprawling financial empire.

The silence in the lobby grew heavier, suffocating the festive mood entirely. Julian’s fingers fumbled with the brass clasp of the folder. With a soft, metallic click that echoed loudly in the cavernous space, the file popped open, revealing the first yellowed page of a legacy stolen in the dark.
