Chapter 9

The mention of business partners and ethics boards hit Jenna harder than any verbal insult could have. The sophisticated infrastructure of his professional life—the foundation upon which his social standing and financial security rested—suddenly hung by a thread over an open abyss. Jenna’s eyes widened in genuine horror as he looked at Beatrice, realizing that this confrontation wasn't just about emotional betrayal; it was a total demolition of his entire existence. “You can’t do that,” Jenna protested, his voice cracking with panic as he stepped closer to the table, ignoring Mark’s warning glare. “If you involve the partners, the firm collapses, the commercial loans get called in, and everyone loses—including Clara and the kids. You’re cutting off your nose to spite your face, Bea!” Beatrice didn't flinch, her expression remaining as hard as granite. “The firm should collapse, Jenna. Everything built on a foundation of systemic fraud and cruelty deserves to burn to the ground.”
Mark watched the exchange with a sudden, sharp clarity. For years, Jenna had managed the family’s joint real estate investments and financial portfolios, keeping Mark and Clara locked into conservative, low-yield trusts while funneling liquid capital into his own secret accounts and speculative shell companies. Mark’s mind raced as he connected the dots between Jenna’s delayed payouts, unexplained project losses, and the mysterious apartment lease two towns over. “You used our investment capital to fund your double life,” Mark said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low rumble as he grabbed Jenna by the lapels of his tailored suit jacket, bunching the fabric in his fists. “You stole from my children’s college funds to pay for your secret lifestyle with Maya.” Jenna struggled weakly against Mark’s grip, his face flushing dark red as he gasped for air under the tightening collar.
Maya stepped forward instinctively, her hands raised in a plea to stop the physical escalation before it spun completely out of control. “Mark, stop! Don’t lower yourself to his level, please!” Maya cried out, her voice breaking through the high-tension atmosphere. Mark hesitated, his breathing ragged and uneven as he stared down at Jenna’s terrified face. With a sudden, disgusted heave, Mark shoved Jenna backward, sending him stumbling across the room until his hip collided sharply with the edge of the sideboard, knocking the crystal pitcher over in a shower of shattering glass and spilling water across the polished wood. Jenna slumped against the furniture, coughing and clutching his throat as he struggled to regain his balance. The physical violence, brief as it was, shattered the last remaining veneer of civility in the house, leaving raw, bleeding nerves exposed to the harsh glare of the overhead lights.
