Chapter 10

The shattered crystal on the floor glittered under the bright dining room lights, a chaotic mess of glass and spilled water that mirrored the state of every relationship in the room. Jenna remained slumped against the sideboard, his breathing shallow and erratic as he stared down at the floor, refusing to meet anyone’s gaze. Clara walked past him without a glance, picking up her coat from the entryway bench and sliding her arms into the sleeves with mechanical efficiency. “Where are you going, Clara?” Mark asked, his voice cracking with sudden desperation as he watched his wife prepare to leave the house. Clara paused with her hand on the front door latch, turning her head just enough to look back at the room. “I’m going to a hotel, Mark. And tomorrow morning, I’m filing for an emergency asset freeze and full custody. You and Jenna can figure out how to divide the ashes of your little empire between yourselves.”

The front door opened and clicked shut behind Clara with a definitive, hollow thud that echoed through the silent house like a gunshot. Mark stood frozen in the center of the room, his hands hanging limply at his sides as the reality of his wife’s departure settled over him. He had lost his marriage, his family, and his peace of mind, collateral damage in a war he hadn't even known he was fighting until the final battle was already underway. Beatrice watched Clara leave, her stern expression softening for a fraction of a second before hardening again as she turned her attention back to the two people remaining in the room. She walked over to the table, swept the scattered chat logs and documents into a messy pile, and shoved them directly into Jenna’s chest. “Get out of my house, Jenna,” Beatrice commanded quietly. “And don’t ever step foot on this property again, or I’ll call the sheriff and have you arrested for trespassing and financial fraud.”

Jenna didn't argue. He clutched the stack of incriminating papers against his suit jacket like a drowning man holding onto a piece of driftwood, his pride completely shattered. He cast one lingering, desperate look toward Maya, seeking some final word of comfort or shared complicity, but Maya turned her face away, unable and unwilling to meet his eyes. The romance had been an elaborate fiction, a toxic bubble that had burst the moment it touched the cold air of accountability. Jenna turned slowly toward the entryway, his steps heavy and broken as he walked out the front door into the chilly evening air, leaving behind the wreckage of his professional and personal life. The heavy oak door clicked shut behind him, leaving only Beatrice, Mark, and Maya standing in the silent, ruined dining room.
