Chapter 4

The revelation that Beatrice had withheld her suspicions for weeks, perhaps even months, hung heavily in the confined space of the dining room. Mark stood up abruptly, the wooden legs of his chair scraping loudly against the floorboards, shattering the tense quiet that had settled over them. “You knew?” Mark demanded, his voice rising in disbelief as he stared at his sister-in-law. “You sat across from us at Thanksgiving, you shared wine with Jenna, and you let us walk around like blindfolded fools while you played detective?” Beatrice met his furious gaze without flinching, folding her arms tightly across her black top. She explained that she had stumbled upon a hidden tablet in Jenna’s home office while looking for tax documents for the family business, and that once she pulled the thread, the entire sweater had unraveled faster than she could process. She hadn’t wanted to destroy Clara’s world without absolute proof, she argued, defending her calculated silence as a necessary evil to protect her sister from half-truths.

Maya listened to the exchange, realizing that she was merely a catalyst in a much larger family war that had been brewing beneath the surface for years. The resentment between Beatrice and Jenna’s side of the family ran deep, rooted in old financial disputes and inherited property arguments that predated the infidelity by a decade. The affair hadn't just broken a marriage; it had provided a nuclear-grade weapon for long-standing factional disputes within the extended clan. Clara re-entered the room quietly, having washed her face in the powder room down the hall. The redness around her eyes remained, but the frantic weeping had given way to a chilling, statuesque calm. She walked straight to the table, ignored Mark entirely, and picked up a single sheet of paper near Maya’s elbow. Her hands were remarkably steady as she read a timestamp from three months prior—the exact weekend Clara had been hospitalized for minor surgery while Jenna claimed to be attending an out-of-town architectural conference.

“He was at your apartment that night, wasn't he?” Clara asked softly, not looking up from the paper. Her voice lacked anger now; it carried the devastating weight of total finality. Maya felt the room spin slightly on its axis. She could lie, she could deflect, she could point out that Jenna had initiated the deception, but looking at Clara’s shattered expression, the instinct to protect herself dissolved. “Yes,” Maya whispered, the single syllable sounding like a gunshot in the quiet house. Mark let out a harsh, bitter laugh that sounded almost like a sob, turning away to stare out the large bay window toward the manicured front lawn. The admission tore away the last remaining shreds of ambiguity, leaving everyone exposed to the raw, ugly truth of their choices. Beatrice picked up her smartphone again, not to point it this time, but to silence an incoming call from Jenna, whose name flashed brightly across the screen as if summoning them all back to reality.
