Chapter 7

The federal holding facility downtown smelled of industrial disinfectant and stale coffee. Under the harsh, buzzing fluorescent lights of Interrogation Room B, Julian Vance sat at a scratched metal table in a gray jumpsuit, his wrists no longer in cuffs but his posture slouched in unmistakable defeat. The arrogant CEO who had brandished a whip in his living room was gone; in his place was a desperate man facing decades in federal prison for racketeering, embezzlement, and conspiracy. The heavy metal door creaked open, and Agent Miller walked in, tossing a thick manila folder onto the table with a sharp slap.

Julian didn’t look up immediately. He stared at the scratched metal surface, his jaw clenched tight. “I want to speak to my primary counsel. This is an unlawful detention based on coerced corporate signatures.”

“Your primary counsel dropped you twenty minutes ago when the second wave of asset seizures hit their own firm accounts,” Agent Miller said evenly, pulling out a chair and sitting down across from him. “And your co-conspirator, Ms. Rossi, has already signed a full confession detailing every shell company you operated over the last four years.”

Julian’s head snapped up, his dark eyes flashing with sudden fury. “Elena? She wouldn't. We had an agreement.”

“Agreements between criminals tend to dissolve when the federal prison terms start adding up to triple digits,” Miller replied, sliding a series of printed bank statements across the table. “These documents trace the diverted funds from the Vance Global R&D accounts directly into your personal offshore holdings in the Caymans. Your fingerprints—digital and physical—are all over every single transaction.”

Julian looked at the papers, his breath catching in his throat. He recognized the account numbers; they were the secure ledgers he thought only he and Elena could access. He had assumed Clara was entirely digitally illiterate, too broken by his psychological games to ever understand corporate finance, let alone hack into his private server network.

“She did this,” Julian whispered, the realization finally breaking through his denial. “Clara... she set this up.”

“Mrs. Vance simply provided the evidence that you accumulated over years of unchecked arrogance,” Miller corrected him sharply. “You underestimated someone who was studying your every move while you were busy trying to break her spirit.”

Julian slumped back in his chair, the last vestiges of his bravado evaporating into the sterile air of the room. He had believed himself untouchable, a master of control who could manipulate both his corporate empire and his domestic life with absolute impunity. Now, the empire was liquidated, his freedom was gone, and the woman he had abused had engineered his complete and total ruin without ever raising her voice.

“What happens now?” Julian asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

“Now, we prepare for trial,” Miller said, standing up and gathering the folder. “Unless you prefer to plead guilty and save the court some time. Though I doubt the judge will show much leniency either way.”
