SHATTERED CRYSTAL / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1

The heavy marble floor felt like ice beneath Clara Vance’s bruised knees. At thirty-five, her body ached from a cruelty she had endured in silence for far too long, hidden behind the high walls of a wealthy estate. Above them, the crystal chandelier chimed softly in the draft from the arched window, where a fierce storm lashed rain against the glass. Lightning flashed, casting sharp, jagged shadows across the room. Across the polished floor stood Julian, her husband, tall and imposing in his black button-down shirt. He casually coiled a leather whip in his palm, his face devoid of remorse. Near the fireplace, sitting comfortably on a deep green velvet sofa, Elena sipped from a crystal flute of champagne. Elena’s red sleeveless dress caught the amber glow of the room, her expression entirely unbothered by the violence that had just transpired. Julian looked down at Clara with cold contempt, delivering a verdict disguised as a lesson.

“Maybe now you'll learn to respect her,” Julian said, his voice flat and detached, as if commenting on the weather.

Clara did not weep. She had exhausted every tear years ago. Instead, her gaze dropped to the cold screen of her smartphone resting on the marble beside her hand. Her fingers, swollen and purple with bruises, trembled slightly as she picked it up. The device hummed continuously with incoming emergency notifications—silent vibrations that signaled the dismantling of a fortress. With deliberate slowness, she unlocked the screen and pressed speed dial, her eyes fixed on the floor.

“Dad, just as you and his life...” Clara spoke softly, her voice barely audible over the rumble of thunder, cutting off the sentence with a calculated precision that left the hanging words pregnant with hidden meaning.

Julian’s brow furrowed slightly at the mention of her father, a titan of industry who had supposedly retired from public life. Before Julian could take a step forward to snatch the phone away, his own pocket vibrated. He pulled out his device, answering instinctively as the call connected on the secure line. A voice on the other end spoke with icy corporate finality. Julian listened intently, the color slowly draining from his harsh face as the reality of his impending ruin settled into his bones.

“Ruin his life. Understood,” Julian whispered back, the phone slipping slightly in his grip.

On Julian’s screen, a cascade of flashing notifications began to multiply. "Bank Asset Freezer," read the first alert. "Board Alerts," flashed the second. "Security Call," warned the third. Panic flickered in his eyes, replacing the arrogant dominance he had worn just moments before. Elena set her champagne glass down with a sharp clink, standing up from the green velvet sofa with sudden, ungraceful urgency. She moved toward him, her long dark hair swaying.

“What's happening?” Elena asked, her voice cracking with the first genuine note of fear.

Clara pushed herself up slowly, using the carved wooden arm of a nearby chair for support. She stood tall, ignoring the searing pain in her legs, and looked directly at Julian with a cold, triumphant expression as another flash of lightning illuminated the room.

“The proof became evidence. Champagne was premature,” Clara said clearly.
