Chapter 10

The second week of the trial brought the defense’s desperate attempts to salvage their case, but their arguments crumbled under cross-examination. Julian’s defense attorney tried desperately to paint his client as a victim of an aggressive corporate takeover orchestrated by Arthur Vance, claiming that the financial records presented by the prosecution had been altered or illegally obtained by Clara. However, when the prosecution called Agent Miller to the stand, any lingering doubt was thoroughly dismantled. Agent Miller calmly presented the forensic digital audit, walking the jury through the encrypted cloud backups and secure server logs that Clara had downloaded and transmitted to federal investigators on the night of her escape.

“These files were accessed using administrative credentials assigned directly to Mr. Vance,” Agent Miller testified, pointing at the digital evidence displayed on the courtroom screens. “Furthermore, the metadata confirms that the secure data transfers originated from the IP address of the Vance residence at the exact moment Mrs. Vance contacted federal authorities.”

Julian’s attorney tried to object on the grounds of unlawful search and seizure, but Judge Sterling overruled the motion swiftly, noting that the evidence had been handed over voluntarily by an individual who possessed legal administrative access to the systems in question.

During a brief afternoon recess, Clara sat in a quiet consultation room with her father and her lead attorney. The heavy oak door was locked, keeping the noise of the bustling courthouse at bay. Clara poured herself a small glass of water, her hands entirely steady.

“They’re going to try to offer a late plea deal before closing arguments tomorrow,” her attorney noted, shuffling through a stack of legal briefs. “Julian’s team knows the digital trail is airtight. They want to avoid a maximum sentence.”

“There are no plea deals left to make,” Clara replied calmly, setting the glass down on the table. “Julian spent years destroying people’s lives while hiding behind a veneer of corporate respectability. He deserves every single year the federal guidelines demand.”

Arthur looked at his daughter with profound admiration. “You’ve more than proven your point, Clara. But remember to leave room in your heart for the life you’re going to build after this is over. Justice is necessary, but it shouldn't be the only thing that defines you.”

“I know, Dad,” Clara smiled faintly, resting her hand over his. “Justice is just the cleaning of the slate. The life comes next.”

When they returned to the courtroom for the afternoon session, Julian refused to look in her direction. He stared fixedly at the defense table, his shoulders slumped, finally confronting the reality of his complete and utter defeat. The illusion of power that had sustained him for a decade was gone, replaced by the cold, unyielding reality of accountability.
