Chapter 8

The gravel crunched sharply beneath the rubber tires of Clara’s pink suitcase as she neared the end of the long driveway. The tall wrought-iron gates of the estate stood wide open, framing a panoramic view of the rolling hills beyond the suburb. Parked just outside the perimeter stood the local sheriff’s cruiser, its engine humming with a steady, low vibration. The driver’s side window rolled down smoothly as Clara approached, revealing the calm, weathered face of Deputy Thomas, a veteran officer whose sharp eyes took in the scene with practiced neutrality.
Clara stopped beside the cruiser, resting the weight of the heavy leather suitcase on the pavement. She offered a polite, professional nod, the kind exchanged by two investigators concluding a successful operation.
"Good morning, Deputy," Clara said, her voice steady and clear in the open air.
"Morning, Mrs. Vance," Deputy Thomas replied, leaning his arm against the rolled-down window frame. He glanced back toward the distant mansion, where two small figures could still be seen standing silhouetted in the open doorway. "Looks like everything went according to plan, then?"
"Precisely as anticipated," Clara confirmed, reaching into the pocket of her beige cardigan to retrieve a small flash drive and a sealed envelope. She handed both items through the car window. "This drive contains the complete digital ledger of the corporate transfers, IP addresses, and encrypted communications linking Julian’s firm to the offshore accounts. The paper copies are inside the suitcase."
Deputy Thomas took the items, sliding the flash drive into his breast pocket and slipping the envelope onto the passenger seat. He had known Clara for months, ever since she walked into his precinct with a briefcase full of forensic accounting data that completely upended local assumptions about the respectable Vance family. He had watched her carefully weave the legal net that was about to close around Julian and Margaret.
"You understand what happens next?" Deputy Thomas asked quietly, fixing his gaze on Clara’s dark, unwavering eyes. "Once these files are logged into the federal database, there’s no turning back. Your husband and his mother are facing serious indictments for wire fraud, embezzlement, and asset concealment."
"I wouldn't have brought those files if I wanted them to escape accountability," Clara replied without a trace of hesitation. "Accountability is the only cure for what ails that house, Deputy."

The officer nodded slowly, expressing a silent measure of respect for the quiet resilience of the woman standing before him. He shifted the cruiser into drive, tapping the accelerator lightly. "I'll handle the notification protocol from here. You have your passport and your ticket?"
"Boarding pass is on my phone," Clara said, patting her cardigan pocket. "My flight leaves for the Pacific Northwest in four hours."
