Chapter 11

The midday sun beat down mercilessly on the slate roof of the Vance mansion, casting long, sharp shadows across the manicured lawns. A pair of unmarked federal vehicles turned off the main highway, their dark paint gleaming dully as they rolled smoothly up the gravel driveway. They did not rush; official power rarely needed to hurry. The cars parked in a semicircle near the front steps, blocking any possible exit, their doors opening in unison as four agents in dark suits and windbreakers stepped out into the crisp air.
Inside the foyer, the heavy oak door remained partially open. Julian and Margaret heard the crunch of gravel and the distinctive car doors slamming shut. Margaret scrambled to her feet with surprising speed, clutching her green silk robe tightly around her chest as she retreated a few steps toward the parlor doors. Her face was pale, drained of all color, her eyes wide with the raw panic of an animal cornered in its own den.
"They're here," Julian whispered, stating the obvious with a terrifying calm. He looked down at his white button-down shirt, noticing a small stain of coffee near the cuff that he hadn't noticed before. It seemed absurdly trivial in the grand scheme of his collapsing world.
Heavy, purposeful footsteps echoed up the stone steps of the porch. A single authoritative knock rattled the heavy wooden door, though it was already open an inch. Without waiting for an invitation, Deputy Thomas pushed the door open wider, stepping into the foyer, flanked by two federal agents carrying leather briefcases and digital recording equipment.
"Julian Vance? Margaret Vance?" Deputy Thomas asked, his voice professional, measured, and entirely devoid of personal malice. He pulled a folded document from his breast pocket and unfolded it with a sharp crackle of paper. "I am Agent Miller with the federal financial crimes division, and this is Deputy Thomas. We have federal warrants for your arrest on charges of wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement."
Margaret let out a sharp, breathless gasp, her hands flying to her mouth as she stumbled backward against the parlor door frame. "This is an outrage!" she managed to gasp out, her voice trembling violently. "Do you know who we are? We built this community! We demand to speak to our legal counsel immediately!"

"You'll have full access to legal counsel as soon as you've been processed at the federal precinct," Agent Miller replied smoothly, gesturing to the agents flanking him. "Mr. Vance, please place your hands behind your back."
Julian did not resist. He let out a long, slow breath, closing his eyes for a brief second as the cold steel of the handcuffs clicked around his wrists. He offered no dramatic protest, no futile struggle. The exhaustion that had been building inside him for years finally settled over his shoulders like a heavy lead cloak.
