SHADOWS OF THE GREEN SILK ROBE / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10

Back inside the grand foyer of the Vance estate, the silence was deafening. Margaret had stopped crying, though her shoulders still heaved with dry, exhausted breaths as she sat slumped against the bottom step of the grand mahogany staircase. Her green silk robe was stained with dust from the floorboards, and her hair had begun unravelling from its severe bun, several grey strands falling across her pale forehead. The pearl earrings glinted dully in the fading morning light as she stared blankly at the marble tiles where Clara’s suitcase had rested only minutes before.

Julian stood near the front door, his hand still resting on the polished wooden frame. He looked out through the open threshold toward the empty driveway, watching the distant dust settle where the sheriff’s cruiser had departed. The illusion of his invulnerability was completely shattered. He knew that Deputy Thomas was already filing the paperwork, that federal investigators were mobilizing, and that his carefully curated corporate persona was about to dissolve into a public scandal.

"Julian," Margaret croaked, her voice dry and broken. She did not look up at him. "Do something. Call our lawyers. Call Senator Henderson. We can’t let her ruin us."

Julian turned away from the door and walked slowly toward his mother. For the first time in his life, he did not rush to comfort her, nor did he offer a reassuring platitude designed to soothe her neurotic anxieties. He looked down at the woman who had orchestrated his every success and failure, seeing her not as an all-powerful matriarch, but as an aging, frightened human being trapped in the ruins of her own making.

"Lawyers can't fix this, Mom," Julian said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "The documents Clara gave them are ironclad. I built those offshore structures myself, and I signed every single fraudulent transfer order. The authorities have the digital signatures. We’re done."

Margaret’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with a mixture of fury and absolute terror. "You gave her the ammunition!" she shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria. "You married a viper! You brought an auditor into our home and let her tear down everything your father and I spent forty years building!"

"No," Julian replied, his voice dropping into a quiet, dangerous register that made Margaret flinch. "I built the prison, Mom. You just taught me how to lock the doors. Clara was simply the one with the courage to throw the key away."
