Chapter 7: The Midnight Visitor

Before Miller could process the staggering revelation, the harsh red emergency strobe lights mounted on the precinct ceiling suddenly flared to life, accompanied by the high-pitched wail of an automated security lockdown. The heavy steel fire doors at both ends of the basement corridor slammed shut with a concussive thud, sealing the bullpen off from the rest of the building. Vance didn't flinch; he simply reached into his shoulder holster and pulled out his service weapon with practiced ease, sliding the slide back to check the chamber. "They're here," Vance muttered, his eyes darting toward the stairwell exit. "Who's here?" Miller yelled over the deafening alarm, drawing his own pistol as a matter of pure survival instinct. "Internal Affairs? Federal marshals?" "Worse," Vance said, standing up and moving swiftly toward the shadows behind the filing cabinets. "The clean-up crew from the city council. They monitor every transaction on the docks, and your little stunt at Chen’s market just triggered their automated asset-redirection protocols. They know you took the cash bag that had the tracker inside." Miller’s blood ran cold. He remembered the heavy canvas bag he had stolen from the register drawer—it hadn't just held local cash; it had been a drop point for the syndicate’s daily courier collections. He had robbed his own employers without even realizing it. The heavy metal door at the end of the basement stairs groaned as someone threw their weight against it from the outside. A loud hydraulic bang echoed through the concrete stairwell as a cutting torch began to whine, sending a shower of white-hot sparks cascading through the gap beneath the door frame. "We have to run," Miller said, taking a step backward. "There's nowhere to run, kid," Vance replied, his voice terrifyingly calm. "The entire block is surrounded. The only person who can stop the council's execution squads right now is the man holding that black remote." Miller stared at Vance in disbelief. "You mean Chen? How is an old grocer going to stop a tactical hit squad?" Vance pulled a small, encrypted burner phone from his pocket and tossed it to Miller. The screen was already lit, displaying a single incoming text message from an unknown number. Miller caught it with one hand, his eyes scanning the glowing text: Bring the cash. Bring the badge. Come alone.
