Chapter 13: The Final Choice

Before Miller could pull the trigger or Vance could close the distance between them, a soft, mechanical click echoed from the dark shadows behind the lieutenant. Mr. Chen stepped into the meager circle of light cast by Vance’s flashlight, holding the sleek black remote control in his palm with the red button gleaming under the damp fluorescent glow of the tunnel ceiling. Vance froze instantly, his arm trembling as the heavy steel wrench hovered in mid-air. The color drained entirely from the lieutenant’s face, leaving him looking suddenly old, frail, and utterly defeated. "You're out of time, Marcus," Chen said, his voice quiet, calm, and absolute. "The federal marshals received the encrypted files from the convenience store security feed three minutes ago. The precinct is already surrounded." Vance slowly lowered the pipe wrench, letting it drop into the shallow water with a heavy, echoing splash. He turned his head toward Chen, his eyes wide with a mixture of rage and terror. "You can't win this, old man," Vance spat, his voice cracking. "The syndicate owns the courts, the judges, and half the state senate. A dead shopkeeper and a disgraced cop won't change a damn thing." Chen didn't smile. He looked at Vance not with hatred, but with the profound, sorrowful pity of a man who had watched too many empires crumble under the weight of their own greed. "I don't need to win, Lieutenant," Chen replied softly. "I only need the truth to see the light of day." Miller stepped forward, sliding his service pistol back into its holster with a decisive click. He walked past Chen, stopping just two feet away from his former mentor. Without a word, Miller raised his right fist and struck Vance across the jaw with a clean, devastating force that sent the lieutenant sprawling backward into the murky water of the drain. Vance didn't try to get up. He lay there coughing, blood pooling at the corner of his mouth, staring up at the vaulted ceiling of the tunnel as the distant, rising wail of approaching sirens began to filter down through the storm grates from the city streets above.
