Chapter 5: Shadows of the Past
Two weeks into Maya's therapy, Arthur received a call from the local precinct. Evelyn had been arrested attempting to liquidate a portion of Maya’s trust fund at a bank downtown.
Arthur met with Detective Miller in a quiet room at the station.
""We found forged medical documents going back two years,"" Miller told him, sliding a folder across the table. ""She was faking doctor notes to keep Maya isolated and out of school.""
""I want the maximum penalty,"" Arthur said, his voice flat and resolute.

Arthur walked out of the station into the bright sunshine, feeling a heavy weight lift from his chest. The legal battle was just beginning, but the physical danger to Maya was finally over.
