A year after the incident, Oak Ridge Elementary hosted its annual spring talent show. Maya signed up to play an original piece she had written, titled ""After the Rain.""
On the evening of the performance, the auditorium was packed with parents and students. Arthur sat in the front row, his heart racing faster than it ever had during his high-powered corporate meetings.
When Maya’s name was called, she walked onto the stage. She didn't use her cane—she walked with a deliberate, slow stride, holding her head high.
