Chapter 9: Unraveling the Empire

The white-haired board member pulled the heavy ledger toward himself, his gloved fingers opening the cover to the first handwritten page. The silence in the dining room was broken only by the soft rustle of aging paper and the heavy, rhythmic breathing of Roni, who stood frozen near the French doors, her high-heeled platform sandals seemingly glued to the floor.
"Good God," the board member murmured, tracing a line of signatures from nineteen-ninety-four. "The eastern trust wasn't dissolved; it was systematically drained and funneled into private shell accounts." He looked up, his piercing gaze fixing on Benjamin. "These aren't accounting errors, Benjamin. This is systemic fraud on a massive scale."
Clara lowered her notepad, her expression unreadable as she watched the empire she had served for a decade crumble in real-time. She did not look surprised; rather, she looked like a prisoner finally hearing the gates unlock.
Roni stepped forward, her voice rising in frantic desperation. "Don't listen to them! This book is an unverified artifact, hearsay from a disgruntled family member trying to extort us during a merger!"
"It's signed by Benjamin himself, Roni," Margaret countered sharply, turning to face her. "Every transfer has his personal authorization stamp. You helped him hide the digital trails for the last five years, but you couldn't erase the physical paper trail left in the vault."
Benjamin raised a single hand, motioning for quiet. He walked slowly around the mahogany table, his brown plaid suit immaculate, his posture unyielding despite the absolute ruin surrounding him. He stopped beside Madeline, looking down at her with a strange mixture of resignation and reluctant respect.
"You have your mother's fire," Benjamin said quietly, speaking only to Madeline so that the board members had to strain to hear. "She fought me until her dying breath, and you've managed to finish what she started."
"She didn't want a war," Madeline replied, her voice steady, restraining the anger that threatened to break through. "She just wanted acknowledgement. She wanted the truth to matter."

"Truth is an expensive luxury in this world," Benjamin replied softly, before turning to face the board. He straightened his dark red tie one last time. "I will not contest the findings. The assets frozen in the eastern trust are to be liquidated immediately and returned to the rightful heirs."
