Chapter 2: Echoes in the Corridor

The heavy oak library door swung open with a faint, oiled creak, revealing a towering stack of mail resting on the mahogany side table outside, though no visitor stood in the empty hallway. Benjamin stared at the unexpected delivery, his brow furrowing beneath his silver-trimmed hair. He reached out with a steady hand, his brown plaid sleeve shifting to expose a gold wristwatch, and lifted the top envelope. It bore no return address, only his name written in a precise, familiar cursive that made his jaw tighten.
Inside the sunlit library, Roni slowly lowered the glowing fireplace tongs, dropping them back into the iron bucket with a sharp, metallic clang that startled the silence. She turned her gaze from Madeline to Benjamin, her dark green silk slip dress rustling softly as she moved. "Who is it, Benjamin?" she asked, her voice low and tight, masking a deep-seated anxiety that only the blonde woman in red seemed to notice.
The blonde woman stepped closer, her rich red satin wrap blouse catching the amber light. "It’s never a coincidence, Benjamin. Not today. Not with what’s hidden upstairs."
Madeline remained kneeling on the Persian rug, her breath coming in shallow, measured gasps. The minor bruises on her cheek throbbed, but her mind raced faster than the physical pain. She had risked everything to smuggle the ledger out of the vault, believing transparency would protect her from Roni’s wrath. Instead, she had walked straight into a trap orchestrated long before she set foot in the mansion.
Benjamin turned back into the room, holding the envelope tightly. He did not open it immediately. Instead, his gaze swept over the gathered women: Roni, rigid and defensive; the blonde woman, calculating and cautious; the dark-haired woman, still clutching the framed photograph like a lifeline; and Madeline, broken yet defiant on the floor.
"The past doesn't stay buried in this house," Benjamin said quietly, his voice echoing in the vast space. "It waits until the foundation is weak, and then it collapses."

With deliberate care, he slid his finger under the envelope's flap, tearing it open to reveal a single photograph and a key. The dark-haired woman gasped, dropping the framed photograph she held as the glass shattered against the floor, revealing that the image inside matched the one Benjamin had just pulled from the envelope.
