Chapter 10: The Reckoning

A collective gasp rippled through the board members as Benjamin conceded without a fight. Roni let out a sharp, choked sound of disbelief, stumbling backward until her back hit the French doors. Her golden clutch slipped from her fingers, hitting the polished hardwood with a dull, echoing thud.

"You can't just give it all away!" Roni hissed, her composure completely shattering. "We spent decades building this! We sacrificed everything!"

"We stole everything, Roni," Benjamin corrected her, his voice devoid of emotion, cutting through her panic with absolute finality. "There is a distinct difference, one that we chose to ignore until tonight."

The white-haired board member closed the ledger with a deliberate motion. "An emergency restructuring committee will take control of the corporate accounts effective immediately. Federal investigators have already been notified of the audit's contents; cooperation at this stage is our only path to avoiding criminal indictments for the remaining executives." He looked directly at Roni, whose face had gone pale under her heavy makeup. "That includes you, Roni."

Clara stood up, packing her notepad and pen into her leather portfolio. She walked over to Madeline, offering a small, genuine smile. "The legal filings for the trust transfer are already drafted in my briefcase. With Benjamin's concession, the courts will process the restitution by morning."

Madeline nodded slowly, the physical pain of her bruises finally fading into the background as the emotional weight of her victory settled over her. She looked at Benjamin, who stood tall amidst the wreckage of his life's work. There was no triumph in her heart, only a quiet, profound sense of closure. The ghosts that had haunted her family for decades could finally rest.

Margaret placed a comforting hand on Madeline's shoulder, guiding her gently away from the table toward the grand hallway. "Let's leave them to the paperwork," Margaret murmured softly. "Some debts can only be settled by the people who created them."

As Madeline walked out of the formal dining room, the heavy double doors began to close behind her, cutting off the sound of Roni's frantic arguments and the steady, methodical voice of the board member detailing asset seizures. The mansion was quiet now, stripped of its deceptive grandeur, waiting for a new dawn.
