Chapter 9: The Tables Turn in the Woods

“Well, well, look what the pine needles dragged in,” the bodyguard sneered, his voice dripping with sadistic satisfaction as he reached down to grab Lily’s arm. Before his fingers could wrap around her small wrist, a heavy hunting knife whistled through the air, embedding itself deeply into the wooden door frame exactly one inch from the bodyguard’s ear. The man froze, his hand hovering mid-air as he whipped his head around toward the open back window. Marcus stood outside, framed by the bright sunlight, his face streaked with dirt and sweat, his eyes burning with a cold, terrifying fury. “Touch her again, and the next one won't miss,” Marcus warned, his voice dangerously quiet, carrying the absolute authority of a man with nothing left to lose. The bodyguard slowly withdrew his hand, sneering as he drew a compact 9mm pistol from his shoulder holster, turning his aim toward the window.

Before the bodyguard could squeeze the trigger, a thunderous roar echoed across the clearing above the cabin. Two federal law enforcement helicopters bearing bright blue Homeland Security insignias broke over the tree line, dropping tactical landing ropes with blinding speed. Fully armored federal agents in black raid gear swarmed down the clearing in seconds, surrounding the perimeter and locking down the escape routes. The pilot of the corporate helicopter that had brought the mercenaries attempted to lift off in a frantic panic, but a federal tactical sniper disabled its tail rotor with a precise disabling round, forcing the pilot to settle the bird roughly back into the dirt with a metallic screech. The federal agents breached the cabin doors from both the front and back simultaneously, pinning the bodyguard against the wall before he could raise his weapon, pressing his face roughly into the dusty floorboards.

Marcus vaulted through the back window, landing lightly on his feet inside the cabin, and rushed straight to the table. He scooped Lily into his arms, holding her tightly against his chest as the terrifying ordeal finally began to unwind. “You’re safe now, baby. It’s over,” Marcus whispered into her hair, his own knees trembling with the sudden release of adrenaline. Captain Reynolds stepped through the front doorway, flanked by two senior federal investigators holding thick manila folders. Reynolds looked at Marcus, then down at Lily, offering a solemn, respectful nod. “Good work holding out, Sergeant. The video you uploaded went viral globally three hours ago. The state attorney general’s office has already issued arrest warrants for Eleanor and Richard Sterling on charges of public corruption, kidnapping conspiracy, and obstruction of justice. Their empire is crumbling by the minute.”
