Chapter 2: The Price of County Royalty

The glowing red recording dot on Marcus’s smartphone blinked rhythmically, a silent witness to the arrogance echoing off the tiled hospital walls. Eleanor Sterling did not flinch; decades of absolute impunity and unearned wealth had insulated her from consequences. She tossed her red hair over her shoulder, her diamond earrings catching the harsh overhead light. Richard Sterling adjusted his maroon suit jacket nervously, clearing his throat, but Eleanor silenced him with a flick of her wrist. “You think a uniform gives you jurisdiction here, Sergeant?” Eleanor sneered, her chin held high as she gestured dismissively toward the bed where Lily pressed herself tightly against the pillows. “The Sterlings built this town. Every road, every judge, every brick in this hospital belongs to us. Your daughter was in the wrong place at the wrong time, playing where she shouldn't have been. If she knows what is good for her tiny lungs, she will forget she ever saw my boys near that ravine.”

Marcus kept the smartphone steady, framing Eleanor’s distorted, spiteful expression in the center of the digital viewfinder. Every fiber of his being screamed for immediate, violent retaliation, but the steady, rhythmic beep of Lily’s heart monitor grounded him. He was a trained soldier, not a common brawler. He knew that raw aggression played directly into the hands of the wealthy and powerful, who could easily twist a fistfight into an assault charge. Instead, he channeled his rage into cold, calculated precision. “Touch my family, and your little girl won't suffice,” Marcus said, his voice dropping an octave, steady and chillingly prophetic. He paused, letting the weight of his words settle before delivering the crushing blow. “You should have checked who was filming.” Eleanor’s confident smirk flickered for a fraction of a second as she stared at the glowing screen in his hand, a sudden, unfamiliar shadow of doubt crossing her features before she quickly masked it with haughty defiance.

The towering bodyguard in the black suit took a menacing step forward, cracking his knuckles. “Give me the phone, soldier, or we’ll remove it from your cold, dead hands,” the bodyguard grunted, his voice flat and threatening. Richard Sterling finally spoke, his tone dripping with patrician condescension. “Let’s be reasonable here, Sergeant. Name your price. Five thousand? Ten thousand? Take a check and take your daughter out of our county by sundown.” Marcus didn't even look at Richard. His focus remained entirely on Eleanor, who was now visibly shifting her weight from foot to foot as the reality of a permanent digital record began to sink into her privileged mind. Marcus tapped the screen, stopping the recording and securely backing up the file to an encrypted cloud server before lowering the device. “My integrity is not for sale, Mr. Sterling. And neither is my daughter’s safety. Now get out of this room before I forget I am wearing this uniform.”
