Chapter 4: The Midnight Breach

The brass door handle rattled violently, turning halfway down before catching on the manual deadbolt Marcus had quietly engaged just minutes prior. Outside, a muffled, angry voice cursed under its breath. Marcus signaled for Lily to stay completely silent beneath the heavy cotton sheets, pointing toward the far corner of the room near the bathroom door. He unclipped his heavy tactical belt from the chair, wrapping it securely around his fist as an improvised deterrent, though he knew guns were out of the question in a crowded hospital. Instead, he relied on his bare hands and the element of surprise. The rattling stopped. For three agonizing seconds, the hallway fell completely dead silent. Then, a sharp metallic click echoed through the room. Someone was picking the lock using a professional tension wrench. The internal tumblers shifted with distinct, mechanical precision. Marcus braced his boots against the polished floor, his muscles coiled like a spring, waiting for the door to yield.
With a soft creak, the door swung inward. The silhouette of the tall bodyguard filled the threshold, his dark sunglasses completely useless in the dimly lit room, yet he moved with practiced, predatory stealth. He stepped inside, his right hand sliding ominously toward his jacket interior. Before the bodyguard could locate the bed, Marcus launched himself forward from the shadows of the bathroom door. He slammed his shoulder directly into the larger man’s chest, driving him backward into the corridor wall with a dull thud that rattled the framed motivational posters hanging nearby. The bodyguard grunted, the air forced violently from his lungs, but he recovered with frightening speed, throwing a vicious right hook that grazed Marcus’s jaw. Marcus ducked beneath the follow-up blow, swept his left leg behind the bodyguard's knee, and drove him hard to the floor, pinning his arm behind his back in a brutal, textbook submission hold.

“Stay down,” Marcus hissed into the man’s ear, pressing his knee sharply into the center of the bodyguard’s spine. Footsteps echoed from the far end of the hallway—night security, alerted by the commotion. Marcus released the groaning man instantly, leaped back into room 304, grabbed Lily’s wheelchair from the closet, and wheeled it out. He scooped Lily into his arms, gently placing her into the seat while dodging the confused questions of the arriving night nurse. “Medical emergency transfer, authorized by command,” Marcus barked authoritatively, flashing his military identification badge without slowing his pace. He wheeled Lily rapidly down the intersecting hallway toward the emergency exit stairs, leaving the stunned bodyguard nursing a bruised shoulder on the floor. They burst through the heavy fire exit door into the cool, damp night air, the glowing red exit sign casting a bloody hue over their desperate escape.
