Chapter 7: The Unseen Ledger

The sharp snap of Richard’s laptop closing seemed to seal Clara’s fate. The bright morning light pouring through the kitchen windows felt mocking now, illuminating the microscopic dust motes like an audience watching a tragedy unfold on a stage. Clara stared down at the sleeping infant in her arms. Maya’s breathing remained slow and even, a heartbreaking contrast to the chaotic cyclone swirling around them.

Elena pulled out the barstool next to Clara and sat down without waiting for Margaret’s permission. The yellow dress flared slightly against the dark tile as Elena turned her full attention to the young mother.

""Clara, listen to me,"" Elena said softly, her voice urgent and steady. ""We need to find the physical backup drives David kept in his studio. If he set up those accounts using your biometric data without your consent, there will be a paper trail—an email, a draft, a note in his personal journal. David was meticulous, but he was also riddled with anxiety. He wouldn't have kept this secret entirely in his head.""

Clara blinked through her tears, the fog of exhaustion parting just enough for a spark of memory to ignite. ""His studio... the locked cabinet in the attic. He told me never to open it because it contained sensitive Sterling corporate research.""

Before Clara could finish the thought, Margaret raised a hand, cutting off the conversation with a single gesture. Her voice was ice. ""Nobody goes into David's studio. That room contains proprietary corporate data belonging to Sterling Enterprises. Entering it without a court-ordered warrant or my explicit authorization constitutes industrial espionage.""

""Corporate research?"" Elena scoffed, turning her head to glare at the matriarch. ""Margaret, your grandson is dead, and his widow is facing criminal conspiracy charges over phantom offshore accounts. The only thing in that attic is likely the truth about whatever desperate financial hole David dug himself into before he died. Are you going to protect your corporation over the future of your own flesh and blood?""

Margaret’s jaw tightened. She looked at Richard, who stood impassive beside the briefcase. ""Richard, check the legal status of the studio property under the residential trust deed.""

Richard tapped his tablet again, bringing up a secondary document. ""The studio space was built as an unpermitted addition during the renovation two years ago. Technically, under the estate deed, it falls under the primary residential zoning category held jointly by Clara and David.""

""Which means,"" Elena interjected triumphantly, ""it belongs to the household, not the corporate board. Clara has every legal right to access her own home's annex.""

Clara looked between Margaret and Elena, a desperate resolve settling into her bones. She handed the sleeping baby to Elena with surprising gentleness. ""Hold her, please. Just for a moment.""

Elena received the small, pink-swaddled bundle with practiced ease, cradling Maya against her shoulder while Clara stood up from the barstool for the first time. Her legs felt weak, shaking beneath the oversized gray t-shirt, but her posture straightened. She had nothing left to lose. They had already accused her, cornered her, and threatened to tear her child away.

""I'm going to get the physical files,"" Clara said, her voice trembling no longer. ""And if David left a confession or a record of what he did with that money, you're all going to read it.""
