Chapter 5: The Audit Begins

The kitchen seemed to drop ten degrees the moment Richard stepped fully into the room. He placed his leather briefcase on the pristine quartz island, right beside the brass candle holder Elena had abandoned. Richard opened the case with two smooth, practiced clicks, pulling out a sleek laptop and a thick stack of printed financial summaries. He did not look at Clara with malice; his demeanor was far worse—he looked at her as if she were a mathematical anomaly that needed to be corrected or discarded.

""Richard,"" Margaret said, gesturing toward Clara with a slight flick of her manicured hand. ""My granddaughter-in-law claims the entirety of the $180,000 dispersal was consumed by medical arrears and home repairs. She also claims she was forced to pawn personal jewelry to purchase infant formula. I want every transaction from the past fourteen months audited immediately.""

Richard adjusted his glasses, tapping a few keys on his laptop. The screen cast a cool blue glow across his sharp features. ""Of course, Mrs. Sterling. I already pulled the primary ledger while en route. According to our banking partners, the initial lump sum was deposited into a joint account held by Clara and the late David Sterling. Within forty-eight hours of David's passing, three distinct wire transfers totaling $110,000 were executed to an off-shore entity registered in the Cayman Islands.""

Clara gasped, the breath entirely leaving her lungs. She stared at Richard in sheer disbelief, her eyes wide and terrified. ""What? That's impossible! I didn't wire any money to the Caymans! I don't even know what a Cayman account looks like!""

Margaret turned slowly to face Clara, her expression hardening from stern to glacial. The micro-expressions on the older woman's face shifted into a mask of supreme betrayal. ""There it is,"" Margaret whispered, her voice dangerously quiet. ""The mask slips. You thought you could play the destitute, starving widow while quietly draining the estate into an offshore account.""

""I didn't do it!"" Clara cried out, her voice cracking as tears streamed freely down her face. The baby, sensing her distress, let out a soft, whimpering cry from within the pink bundle. Clara instinctively rocked the infant, whispering frantic shushes while her own world collapsed around her. ""I swear to God, I never touched a Cayman account! I didn't even know David had offshore accounts!""

Elena rushed to Clara’s side, placing a steadying hand on the back of the young mother’s chair. She looked fiercely across the island at Richard. ""Hold on a second. David handled all the digital banking before he died. You know how tech-obsessed he was. Is it possible these accounts were set up before their marriage?""

Richard tapped his tablet again, his expression remaining completely neutral. ""The accounts in question were activated six days after the wedding, Elena. Both signatures appear on the digital authorization logs. Clara’s biometric digital stamp was used to authenticate the transfers.""

Clara stared at Richard in horror. ""That's a lie. I never signed anything like that. David... David asked me to scan my fingerprint on his phone once when we were setting up a family health app. He said it was for emergency medical access. He lied to me.""
