Chapter 4: The Arrival of the Enforcer

The intercom chimed a second time, a short, impatient tone that signaled the arrival of the Sterling family legal apparatus. Elena flinched at the sound, her hand gripping the edge of the quartz island. The illusion of a private family dispute was shattered; professional coldness had arrived at the front door.

Margaret pressed a button on the smart-home panel embedded in the wall. Her voice was steady, clipped, and authoritative. ""Open the side security gate, Richard. Come directly to the kitchen.""

""Understood, Mrs. Sterling,"" a crisp, digitally compressed voice replied through the speaker before disconnecting.

Clara clutched the baby tighter, her knuckles turning bone-white. The realization that strangers—lawyers, accountants, forensic investigators—were about to descend upon her modest, freezing sanctuary made her feel utterly cornered. She looked around the bright modern kitchen, suddenly hating its clean lines and expensive finishes. It was a cage designed to look like a home, purchased with Sterling money and monitored by Sterling eyes.

""Please, Grandma,"" Clara whispered, her voice cracking as fresh tears spilled over her lashes. ""Don't do this. Don't turn my life into a court case. I haven't done anything illegal. I haven't stolen a dime. Every cent of that $180,000 went toward keeping this house from foreclosure and paying off the hospital's collection agency. I can show you the receipts. They're in the drawer right there.""

She pointed a trembling finger toward the island drawer, but Margaret didn't even glance in that direction.

""Receipts can be fabricated, Clara. Numbers on bank statements cannot,"" Margaret said coldly, adjusting the cuffs of her white blazer. ""If you managed your funds with half the diligence you use to make excuses, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Richard will conduct a full forensic review of every account associated with you and David. If there is a discrepancy, it will be addressed according to the family charter.""

Elena stepped between Margaret and Clara, her auburn hair catching the morning light as she shook her head in disbelief. ""You are acting like a tyrant, Margaret. This is your own flesh and blood—well, the mother of your great-grandchild. Have you completely forgotten what human compassion feels like? Or did you trade your soul for your first million?""

Margaret’s eyes flashed with genuine anger, the first crack in her icy composure. ""Watch your tone, Elena. You are a guest in my orbit, nothing more. I have kept this family afloat through three recessions and two major scandals by refusing to let sentimentality cloud my judgment. Weakness breeds vulnerability. If I show leniency here, the entire foundation crumbles.""

Before Elena could retort, heavy footsteps echoed down the tiled hallway. The kitchen threshold darkened as a tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal-gray suit appeared. Richard carried a slim leather briefcase in one hand and a tablet in the other. His expression was entirely devoid of warmth, his wire-rimmed glasses reflecting the bright kitchen lights.

""Mrs. Sterling,"" Richard nodded briskly, acknowledging Margaret first before casting a clinical, professional glance toward Clara and the baby. ""I brought the preliminary wire archives and the asset-freezing injunction documents. Are we ready to proceed?""
