Chapter 2 - The Woman Who Knew Everything

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The rain continued falling beyond the awning while Thomas stared at the woman who had destroyed our marriage.

"What do you mean Vincent has been watching Amelia?"

Sarah looked toward the street.

"We shouldn't talk about this outside."

"Then start explaining."

"Thomas, please."

He stepped closer, but I raised a hand before either of them could reach me.

“Don't take another step, Thomas.”

He stopped. Sarah kept looking at the traffic.

“Vincent has people tracking her?” Thomas asked.

Sarah nodded.

“Since the settlement paperwork was prepared. He wanted to know where she worked, whether she had legal help, and whether she was asking questions.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why would he care about a supermarket cashier?”

“Because your name was used to authorize money leaving the family office,” she said. “If you challenged that authorization, the transfer could fall apart.”

Thomas looked at her.

“You helped him.”

Sarah's silence told us enough.

“Amelia, I didn't know he would follow you,” she said finally.

“But you knew I was pregnant.”

“Yes.”

“And you kept that from him.”

She looked down.

“Yes.”

A cold gust blew rain across the awning. I suddenly remembered I had been standing all day, that my feet hurt, and that my baby was pressing against my ribs.

“I need to go home,” I said.

Thomas reached for his wallet.

“Let me get you a car.”

“I can arrange my own ride.”

I called Marta, who insisted on driving me. Thomas watched me leave without approaching.

As we pulled away, Daniel Reeves called my phone.

“Mrs. McCauley, I need you to know something before anyone asks you to sign a document.”

May you like

“What?”

“The eight-point-four-million-dollar transfer wasn't the only transaction made under your name.”
