Chapter 10 - The Boardroom Confession

McCauley Capital's audit committee convened a formal meeting to address the independent findings. Thomas was required to answer questions about his approvals, Vincent's authority, and the controls that had failed.
I attended only a separate session arranged with my counsel, where I confirmed that I had never authorized the disputed settlement release.
Vincent's attorneys challenged the allegations and questioned the accuracy of the financial review. The investigators tested the records rather than relying on either side's confidence.
Sarah provided messages, and Daniel supplied correspondence showing the pregnancy notice had arrived and then been improperly recorded as withdrawn.
Thomas acknowledged his failure to review approvals adequately. His willingness to say it publicly cost him credibility among investors, but it was the first step toward being accountable.
The board removed Vincent from his executive role and took steps to secure the financial systems. Relevant information was referred to outside authorities.
It wasn't a tidy victory. Employees feared layoffs. Investors demanded answers. People who had never met me discussed my pregnancy as if it were a corporate risk factor.
Thomas called that evening.
“I want to make sure you and Lily have what you need.”
I went still.
“How do you know that name?”
“The ultrasound picture. I'm sorry I saw it without asking.”
“You've never met her,” I said. “Don't make promises you're not prepared to keep.”
“I won't.”
I listened to the silence between us.
Then he added, “The committee found evidence the fraudulent documents were being prepared before I separated from you.”

I closed my eyes.
So the scheme had begun while I was still trying to save our marriage.
