Chapter 11 - The Daughter I Was Waiting For

As my due date approached, Lena helped negotiate interim financial arrangements and clarify how parenting questions would be handled after the birth. No one treated an alleged waiver as a reason to ignore my rights or the child's needs.
I kept my own obstetric team and chose who would accompany me to the hospital. Marta promised to answer her phone at any hour.
Thomas asked whether he could be notified when the baby arrived. After discussing it with my counsel and thinking carefully, I agreed that a notice could be sent. I made no promises about his presence during labor.
At thirty-nine weeks, my contractions began just after midnight.
Marta drove me through the quiet city while I gripped the seat belt and tried to breathe evenly.
Hours later, I heard the first cry of my daughter.
Lily Hayes.
She was warm and furious at the world, with a soft tuft of dark hair and impossibly tiny fingers.
I held her against my chest.
“Hello, sweetheart,” I whispered. “I've been waiting for you.”
Marta stood beside the bed, crying more than I was.
“You did it.”
“We did,” I said.
After I had rested, Lena arranged for Thomas to receive the agreed notification. He sent a brief reply asking whether Lily and I were healthy, and he respected the instruction not to arrive uninvited.
For the first time, he had listened to a boundary without negotiating.
The next morning, I looked at my daughter sleeping nearby and understood that whatever happened to the settlement or the company, her life would not be defined by their scandals.

Then Lena called with another development.
The authorities had formally begun proceedings concerning the financial documents and surveillance, and Sarah had agreed to provide further evidence.
