Chapter 5

The beam of Maya’s flashlight flickered against the damp insulation of the crawlspace as she stared down at the photographs. The baby in the pictures wasn't David. It was someone else, someone whose facial structure bore an unsettling resemblance to Leo. Maya’s hands shook as she flipped through the typed medical notes, page after dense, clinical page detailing experimental genetic therapies, behavioral isolation trials, and psychological profiling.
It was a genealogical nightmare. David wasn't just a paranoid father; he was the surviving administrator of a defunct, unethical private research initiative that had apparently targeted children with specific hereditary traits. And Leo wasn't just a random child in his care—he was the final, living subject of an experiment David had spent thirty years trying to finish or bury.
"Maya? Are you up there?" Elena’s voice floated up from the attic ladder, strained and urgent.
"Yeah. I'm coming down," Maya called back, her voice sounding hollow even to her own ears.
She gathered the manila folders, clutched the metal lockbox to her chest, and carefully backed out of the crawlspace. Descending the folding wooden ladder, she dropped lightly onto the hallway floor. Elena was waiting for her, her face pale in the dim light. Leo was still fast asleep in the guest room, exhausted by the day’s terror.
"What did you find?" Elena asked, her eyes darting to the dusty files in Maya’s hands.
"Everything," Maya whispered, leading Elena back into the kitchen.
They sat at the wooden table under the harsh overhead light. Maya spread the documents out. Elena picked up the top adoption form, her eyes scanning the dense legal jargon. As she read, all the color drained completely from her face. Her breathing hitched, and she pressed a hand over her mouth to suppress a gasp.
"This... this isn't possible," Elena murmured, her voice trembling. "David told me he was an only child. He told me our family tree was entirely normal."
May you like
"He lied," Maya said bitterly, tapping a finger against the document. "He’s not just a researcher, Mom. He’s part of whatever monstrous project created these files. And he thinks Leo is the key to reactivating it. That’s why he’s been acting like this. He’s losing his mind because his past is catching up with him, and he’s dragging us down with it."
Elena looked up, tears welling in her eyes again, but this time they were fueled by a terrifying realization. "If he went out tonight, he didn't just leave to clear his head. He went to find someone from the old project. Someone who can help him take Leo away for good."
