Chapter 14

The afternoon sun was high in the sky by the time Maya, Elena, and Leo stepped out of the rustic cabin into the fresh forest air. The police helicopters had departed, replaced by unmarked federal vehicles and investigative units cataloging the evidence seized from the site.

A tall, middle-aged woman in a dark gray suit—identifying herself as Federal Special Agent Vance—walked over to meet them by the porch steps. She held a clipboard with a stack of formal paperwork.

"Ms. Elias? And Mrs. Vance?" the agent asked politely.

"Yes," Maya replied, keeping her arm firmly around Leo’s shoulders.

"I want to thank you. The digital files your daughter transmitted this morning have given us everything we needed to execute simultaneous raids on Vanguard Bio-Tech's Portland headquarters and their offshore server farms. The entire operation has been dismantled. Your husband—and the directors backing him—are in custody facing federal conspiracy and child endangerment charges."

Elena let out a long, shuddering breath, the last remaining tension finally draining from her shoulders. "Will we have to testify?"

"Eventually, yes," Special Agent Vance said gently. "But you're under federal protective custody for the time being, and all state resources will be made available to ensure your safety and privacy moving forward. You can finally put this nightmare behind you."

"Thank you," Maya said simply, feeling a profound weight lift from her chest.

They were driven back to civilization in the back of a secure federal transport, watching through tinted windows as the dense pine forests gave way to rolling green hills and eventually the familiar skyline of the city. Though their lives had been upended, and the road to healing would be long and difficult, the dark shadow that had hung over their family for years was finally gone.

That evening, staying in a quiet, secure family apartment provided by the federal witness support program, Maya sat at the kitchen island. The countertop was clean, save for a small pad of drawing paper and a fresh box of colored crayons Leo had left behind.

Leo sat beside her, carefully coloring a picture of a bright green tree under a shining yellow sun. He looked up, smiling without a trace of fear in his wide, innocent eyes.

"Maya, can we go to the park tomorrow?" Leo asked hopefully.

Maya smiled back, feeling a deep, enduring peace settle into her soul. "We can go anywhere you want, buddy. Anywhere at all."
