Chapter 13

The heavy cabin door rattled as federal agents swarmed the threshold, their rifles lowered but their commands absolute and unyielding. David’s two hired operatives didn't hesitate; they dropped their hands away from their belts, raising them slowly into the air and stepping back against the log walls as state troopers rushed past them to secure the room.
David stood frozen, the sidearm hanging limply in his right hand. The deafening roar of the police helicopter hovering just above the tree line drowned out all other sound for a tense, agonizing moment before the pilot pulled the aircraft up to circle the perimeter.
"Drop the weapon, sir! Do it now!" a tactical commander shouted, stepping into the cabin with his sights locked on David.
David slowly turned his head to look out the small cabin window, watching as additional police cruisers sealed off the logging road outside. The digital files Maya had transmitted via the satellite uplink had triggered an automated federal priority flag at the Department of Justice, mobilizing regional law enforcement long before Vanguard’s private security could intervene.
With a hollow, defeated sigh, David let the pistol slip from his fingers. It clattered loudly against the wooden floorboards. Two troopers moved in instantly, pinning his arms behind his back and snapping cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.
"You're making a mistake," David muttered, his voice devoid of its former arrogance as he was hauled toward the open doorway. "Vanguard... they won't let this go."
"Tell it to a federal judge, Mr. Elias," the commanding officer replied sharply, pushing him out into the crisp morning air.
Elena sank down onto the edge of the wooden table, her hands covering her face as silent tears of relief finally broke through her exhausted restraint. Maya rushed over to the cot where Leo was sitting up, wide-eyed and trembling, clutching his blue crayon like a talisman.
"Are the bad men gone, Maya?" Leo asked softly, burying his face in her shoulder as she pulled him into a desperate, protective embrace.

"They're gone, buddy," Maya whispered, her own voice cracking with emotion as she kissed the top of his head. "It's all over. We're safe now."
Federal investigators began processing the cabin interior, carefully securing the metal lockbox, the manila folders, and the satellite communicator as primary evidence. A female paramedic stepped into the cabin moments later, offering warm blankets and medical checks for Elena and Leo.
