Chapter 4: A Fractured Trust

The minutes ticked relentlessly toward the ceremony. Downstairs, the low murmur of the gathered congregation swelled slightly as the seating arrangements neared completion. In the bridal suite, however, time seemed frozen in a state of suspended animation. Clara walked away from Julian, her satin train whispering against the floor as she paced the length of the room. Every fiber of her being screamed at her to walk out that heavy oak door, find her brother, and drive away from the estate before the vows were spoken. Yet, when she looked at Julian—standing in the harsh light of the window, looking every bit the man she had loved, respected, and planned a future with—she felt an anchor of loyalty that refused to let go easily.

"Marcus is downstairs, isn't he?" Clara asked quietly, pausing near the vanity to pick up her bridal bouquet of white roses and cascading ivy. The sweet floral scent offered a faint contrast to the heavy, claustrophobic air of the room.

"I saw his car in the VIP lot when we arrived this morning," Julian admitted, his jaw tightening again. "I thought he was simply attending out of familial obligation. We haven’t spoken in over two years, not since the last dispute over the estate settlement. I should have known he wouldn't let sleeping dogs lie."

"We cannot let him win," Clara said, turning to face him with a sudden, fierce resolve hardening her features. The shock was beginning to give way to strategic calculation. "If we panic, if we cancel the wedding now, Marcus achieves his exact objective. He exposes you on his terms, in front of everyone who matters."

"What are you suggesting, Clara?" Julian asked, his brow furrowing as he stepped closer. "Are you saying we pretend nothing happened? That we ignore the ledger sitting three feet away from us?"

"No," she replied firmly. "I am saying we take control of the narrative. We go down there, we exchange our vows, and we face whatever Marcus has planned with our heads held high. But the moment the reception begins, you deal with your cousin. Permanently."

Julian studied her face, seeing a strength in her that made him fall in love with her all over again, mixed with a cold pragmatism he hadn't known she possessed. "And the wardrobe? We can't just leave it here while the suite is unattended during the ceremony. Anyone from the catering staff or the bridal party could walk in."

"I locked the door to the suite from the outside using the master key when we came up," Clara said, reaching into the small sequined clutch resting on the vanity and pulling out the heavy brass skeleton key. She held it up between two fingers. "No one enters this room until we return. When the ceremony is over, you and I will come back up here alone, open that wardrobe, and take every single piece of evidence down to the incinerator behind the carriage house ourselves."

"Clara, burning it... if the authorities or Marcus have digital copies or duplicates of those ledgers, destroying the physical copies won't protect us indefinitely," Julian warned, his voice low and cautious.

"Then we deal with Marcus first," she stated flatly, slipping the key securely into the pocket hidden within the heavy folds of her wedding dress. "Let's go."
