Chapter 11: The Bluff Called

Marcus’s chest rose and fell in shallow, rapid breaths as the reality of his miscalculation settled over him. The sleek silver flash drive on the desk suddenly looked less like a weapon of extortion and more like a self-destruct button. He looked from Julian to Clara, his eyes darting frantically between them as he tried to calculate a way out of the trap.

"You're bluffing," Marcus muttered, though his voice lacked any conviction. "You wouldn't involve federal investigators on your own wedding day. It would destroy your reputation as much as mine."

"My reputation is built on the life I’ve lived honestly for the past ten years, Marcus, not the name I left behind," Julian answered, his voice steady and cold. "Your reputation, on the other hand, is built entirely on the credit of a family name you’ve spent your entire life exploiting. If those files go public, you go to federal prison. If they don't, we walk out of this room, you hand over that ledger and the flash drive, and we never speak of this again."

Marcus stood frozen behind the mahogany desk, his knuckles white as he gripped the polished wood edge. The silence in the library was profound, broken only by the steady ticking of the grandfather clock. Every second that passed chipped away at his remaining defiance. He had played his final card, betting everything on the assumption that Julian would fold to protect his public image. He had drastically underestimated the quiet strength of the partnership standing before him.

Slowly, deliberately, Marcus reached out and picked up the silver flash drive, sliding it back into his pocket. Then, he pushed the heavy leather ledger across the desk toward Julian.

"You always were a ruthless bastard, Julian," Marcus spat, his voice trembling with suppressed rage and humiliation. "Just like our grandfather."

"No, Marcus," Julian replied, picking up the ledger and tucking it securely under his arm. "I chose to break the cycle. You chose to drown in it."

Without another word, Marcus turned on his heel, brushed past them with hurried, uneven strides, and pulled open the heavy double doors of the library. He vanished down the dim corridor, the sound of his rapid footsteps fading away into the distance until the wing was completely silent once more.

Clara let out a long, shuddering breath she didn't realize she had been holding, her shoulders sagging slightly as the adrenaline rush began to recede. Julian turned to her, his expression softening instantly as he dropped the cold, hardened demeanor he had maintained against his cousin. He reached out, gently cupping her face with his hand, his thumb brushing away a stray tear that had slipped down her cheek.

"Are you alright?" Julian whispered, his voice full of deep, raw tenderness.

"I am now," Clara whispered back, leaning into his touch. "Let's go back to our wedding."
