Chapter 6: Confronting the Truth

Elena’s hands trembled as she picked up the crumpled paper. Her eyes scanned the medical jargon, the mismatched patient identification codes, and the glaring red warning stamp applied by the regional laboratory’s quality assurance department. The words blurred together, but the terrifying implication remained crystal clear. The biological timeline did not match the physical reality of the birth.

“This... this is impossible,” Elena breathed, shaking her head violently as tears spilled over her lashes. “Dr. Vance delivered this baby. He would have known. The hospital ran standard verification tests upon admission.”

“The hospital relied on the clinic’s master file, which was corrupted months ago,” Chloe said, standing straight, her posture rigid. She crossed her arms, looking down at her sister with a mixture of triumph and profound sorrow. “They didn't check the DNA markers because nobody suspected a clerical error. Why would they? Sisters going through fertility treatments at the same facility at the same time—it’s a statistical nightmare. But it happened, Elena. That baby downstairs has my eyes, my genetic markers, and my heartbreak.”

The door swung open abruptly, interrupting them. Beatrice stood in the doorway, her expression like carved stone. Behind her stood Mark, his face pale and strained, holding the manila folder from the study.

“You shouldn't have told her like this, Chloe,” Beatrice said, her voice cutting through the tension of the room like a scalpel. She walked to the side of the bed, ignoring Chloe as she looked directly into Elena’s horrified eyes. “It is true, Elena. Dr. Vance briefed us ten minutes ago. There has been a catastrophic administrative failure at the clinic.”

Elena clutched the sheets to her chest, her breathing turning shallow and rapid. The heart monitor beside the bed emitted a sharp, steady beep that began to accelerate. “You knew? Mother, you knew and you came in here to let her drop this bomb on me while I’m still recovering from surgery?”

“We found out moments before you did,” Mark interjected, stepping forward to place a calming hand on the metal frame of the bed. His light blue shirt was still stained with grass and dirt from his heroic leap. “We were coming up to talk to you gently, Elena, to figure out how to handle this legally and medically without destroying our family. Chloe acted on her own accord.”

“Because you were going to hide it from me!” Chloe screamed, the thin veneer of her composure shattering completely as she whirled around to face Mark and Beatrice. “You were going to sweep it under the rug, just like you always do with Sterling family scandals! You were going to let me rot in my apartment while my child called my sister ‘Mama’!”

“Enough!” Beatrice’s voice cracked like a whip, silencing the room instantly. At sixty, her authority remained absolute. She looked at her two daughters—one broken by grief, the other shattered by a medical nightmare—and felt the crushing weight of generations of secrets. “Shouting will not change biology, and it will not solve the legal quagmire we are now facing. We need to handle this with precision, not hysteria.”
